outdoor idea?
    #1356389 - 03/07/03 05:05 AM (21 years, 27 days ago)

i posted in the regular cult forum no answers so maybe this is the appropiate forum.......
.my cat lives where snow last till early april by that imy cat mean it still snows now my cat wants do some outdoors but my cat wants to have the benifiet of being able to add substrate to keep it going so that my cat can use the same bed the following year. mycat does know that the ridiculously freezing cold cold kill it but...............i was wondering

ok say my cat dug a bed about 1 foot deep 3ft by 3 ft (subject to change)then by placing two 5 gallon (or a lil smaler buckets) in holes in the middle of the bed so that the foot deep beds bottom would line up with opening of the buckets. sort of acting like a deep resavoir of mycilium to maybe up the chances of it surviving it would keep my cat from having to dig a bed to deep. so when the bed and buckets are spawned they will eventually colonize as one (of course lol) but if the frost kills a lil of the top layer the mycilium at the bottom could regrow as soon as weather(temps) promit.......right?

so what im asking is this a waste of tim will it work and if it can could these lil extras help too???????

could you put a couple resavoirs of water and a lil or alot of vermiculite (so that it wicks and dosent drown mycilium) so it could have an internal source

would lining the bed with a good plastic ( maybe punch very tiny holes all around to breath)to help keep al those danm worms and millipeds and digger beetles and such from eating the bed underground?
moeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee im looking at you lol

If it's too cold it wont colonize most likely anyway so there really in so point in doing it while its colds.Wait until it gets no colder than about 50F at night.

Ahh I see.The bigger and deeper you make it the more heat it will produce on it's own.The bigger the patch the less you'll have to worry about that

if you're asking how to protect it from the cold next winter, the answer is insulation . maybe some heat cables if its near enough to the house .
i don't think cubensis mycelium will grow much deeper then 8-10" .
i have grown asparagus in N.Dak by covering the plants with coffee cans, and stuffing them with straw .

I don't think it would regenerate due to the fact that it doesn't in nature that far north, i am to the understanding that cubensis grow only in the area of america that very rarely has any snow at all, i think this is an indicator that it won't survive the frigid winters. but it will last through one season, just have to restart it each season. good idea but it won't work.

He's probably right, but we get a couple of inches of snow every year and a patch can last through that.Wild growing cubensis is still pretty rare here,it probably wouuldn't even make it through a winter that far north unless it was HUGE as hell.

Okay.Do this as soon as possible,as soon as it gets no colder than around 50 degress at night. You'll need a shitload of spawn,at least 3-4 gallons, but you should use more if possible. You'll need a LOT of hay, like several bales. It gets pretty damn cold up there so you'll want to make it big enough where it generates enough heat on it's own.If you can use like 4-5 bales of hay and an equal amount of manure,I think it might work.Dig the deepest and widest hole you can stand to dig and fill the bottom with hay and stomp it down until there's a good size layer on the bottom.Fill with dry, leached manure and more hay. You'll wan to mix the spawn evenly as possible throught filling the hole, every once in a while stir and mix it up as best as possible.Leave some spawn and manure for the end.On top of the patch spread some manure and spawn, and finally another layer of manure on top.(you'll want some spawn near the top of the patch) Get as much water as possible and water it throught the mixing/filling process.Get some grass seeds and sprinkle them everywhere.Water the patch well again and leave for at least a month.

that sounds a little lacking im going to soak the manuer and straw is that so bad also my cat putting two 5 gallon buckets so im going to layer spawn substrate all the way up pu it in the ground theeeen im going to layer spawn and substrate to fil a foot deep 4 ft by 4 ft patch. im actually positive this will work also i dont know about grass seed cause i want to pile on more substrate to build a mound( ithought it might help to

WOW,I thought you would be discouraged by the numerous hay bales and hours of extended digging and work. You'll need LITERALLY as much manure as possible, lay it all out on the ground and leach it. When you have your patch completed,SPRINKLE GRASS SEEDS EVERYWHERE. It helps the humidity,it's like a terrarium for them and it also helps camouflage them. And you also definatley want to pile it up beyond the hole you dug, higher and wider. You want to make this patch as big as possible, and even if it doesn't last throughout winter you'll have a shitload of fruits before then.I think if you make it it good enough it should work

I don't think the strain will matter much for him since he's so far north

sooooo... if u live in the north.. lets say.. somewhere near the coast of British Columbia... and u make an outdoor patch in the summer, and it gets cold in the winter, like -20 C*, will your patch die out and u have to redo it every year?
