Triethylene glycol
    #1356179 - 03/07/03 03:37 AM (21 years, 27 days ago)

In the 'Mushroom Cultivator' it suggests that "By asperating Triethylene glycol, a cloud of highly viscous droplets is created. As the droplets descend they trap airborne contaminant particles. Finer and more volatile then mineral oil, triethylene glycol leaves little or no noticeable film layer".
Swim usually uses a laminar flow cabinet in the lab but have been doing some "home work". Can anybody suggest a way of him safely asperating triethylene glycol at home, as he has litre of the stuff sitting about? Has any one successfully used this method ?

here is a little further input  , i was moseying around Kmart last night and I spotted some of that new-fangled disinfectant they've been pitching on TV called OUST. now, when they first started avertising i was curious as to what the active ingredient(s) were. they advertise it as killing 99.9% of airborne contaminants whereas lysol is only suited for surfaces (so they say). you may have guessed, OUST's active is 3EG. So, there is a convenient method of applying this oil. the only information i gathered via google was the health hazards of using 3EG, so you may wanna research that. funny how something bad for lungs is sold with a scent

Damn it what's that stuff called? You know, the stuff in a thin aerosol can, blue stripes. Ozone or Ozoner or something? Anyway, it's really common (takes pot smoke out of the air in seconds) and it's Tri-Ethelyne Gylcol, in an aerosol can. And it smells good.

i believe the comercial products use either a candle like deal, or a plastic cone with a heating element like glade air fresheners. i'm not really sure though.

Thanks for your replies. I have tried to asperate triethylene glycol by heating it but ended up in causing a small fire and a lot of smoke!
In Ryche Hawks sterlisation tips it says 'use a wick lamp with triethylene glycol that is vaporized through the heated wick. It does n't mention amounts but i believe that simply mixing it with ethanol in a alcohol lamp will just burns the 3EG off. Perhaps then the best method is simply to apply it using a mister

be careful with flamable materials and open flame. house fires aren't fun.
