Alder Pellets and Psilocybe Azurescens

Finding Alder wood here is Texas is near to impossible. The best I found was Alder pellets in a 25 lb bag. Can these be substituted for wood chips in the terrarium?
I bought a 3 buck blender from the Goodwill store and chopped some pellets into a nice chunky sawdust to combine with normal hardwood sawdust, wheat bran and gypsum (thanks RR for great advise in your videos) and plan to inoculate jars "à la Eric" and grow them in my wine chiller.
Any advice so far?

Nevermind ...The pellets are nothing more than compressed sawdust. I'll start with my substrate and jars, I found a good place online for the Alder chips I'll order them here: http://www.justsmokedsalmon.com/Alder.htm

Well I feel dumb... I find out the Alder pellets I bought were nothing more than compressed sawdust (don't ask.. wasn't thinking); which is perfectly fine with me because I was wanting the sawdust anyway. The moment of revelation came when I added water to a big mixing bowl of them... holy shit! they expanded to at least 4X in size and started to breakdown into wet sawdust. Which was also fine.. just that now I have a butt-load of sawdust with an undetermined amount of water. So this morning I'm baking sawdust in the oven at 250ºF to dry it out and store.
In hind sight I'm glad this happened, because it's easier to measure sawdust rather than in pellet form.
MMMMMM... The aroma of Alder wood baking is very pleasant!!
(My daughter came by and thought I was baking cookies!! LOL. Of course when I told her what it was, it removed all doubt, for her, about my sanity)

When I lived in Dallas, I used Oak, and when I was out west in Abilene, I used mesquite. Any hardwood species should work well, so forget the alder. The problem you're going to have with azures and/or cyans is they need a long, cold, wet fall to fruit. In most parts of TX it goes from summer to winter very fast and dry, which isn't conducive to that species. RR

That's great news RR, I'll use hickory chips instead of Alder I have a bunch I use for BBQ smoking.
As far as growing them I'm working on a modified wine chiller set at 42º F that will house a plastic terrarium. I replaced the original light source LED's with brighter ones 18000mcd at 30º angle which makes a huge difference yet not as bright as I want so the next step is to install a florescent light as a secondary light source.
I do have a question for you: At what temperature should I colonize them at? 75º -81º F or since they are cold loving fungi a lower temp?

Colonize azures/cyans at 60F to 70F. I doubt you'll have much success fruiting in a cooler. You'll want to use an unpasteurized casing layer, and they tend to contaminate in enclosed spaces. RR

The Psilocybe Azurescens setup is more like a "mad scientist" attempt since in Denton/Dallas climate is not ideal. I am thinking about trying to grow some outdoors in Lubbock (my family is there) where is much colder weather.
I'm planning also growing Golden Teachers any good hints on substrate/colonize temp/ fruiting temp? I'm building a terrarium like in your video for them.

Most, if not all, of the info you'll need for that can be found on the very same website you got RR's terrarium tek from.
Verm/BRF/Water (ie, PF Tek) at a 2:1:1 ratio along with 1tbsp of gypsum per 5 jars of substrate(not covered in RR's video clip).
Cubensis mycelium will do fine colonizing anywhere between the mid 60s up to ~81f, though 75-80 is ideal. Cubensis will also fruit in the same temps it was colonized in, 70-75f is ideal, though some may argue that +- a few degrees.
Good luck with both your projects.

Well, Alan Rockefeller's discovery of a Psilocybe Cyanescens near me, In Escondido CA, gives me a shred of hope, but only a shred.
I will be making an outdoor Azure bed, just for fun, as I do not have a temp control chiller/fridge to try.
The spawn certainly does seem to be coming along nicely:

The is set to sail.
I will be spawning to chips in a myco-bag to get them started and then will transfer them to the bed.
Take care all,
JD
