Uncased bulk substrates should be left alone and covered until 100% colonized.  Overlay is a vastly misunderstood phenomena which only affects species such as agaricus(button mushrooms) which require a casing layer.

Whatever you do don't deep scratch.  That's a failed method which was disproved 30 years ago.

okay thanks RR what should he do? Do you have an idea of what's causing this, or any idea of what to do with it?

Do a search on the forum for 'cauliflower'. That's what some of us call what you have there. It's not a good sign.

What can be done about it? Can he take it out of the container dunk it and put it in a shotgun fc and treat it like a cake?

My honest guess is that it will continue to vegetate like that until the entire thing is covered in cauliflower growths. You might start to see some orange pus and some light beige / tan areas. Then after a month or two of that, it will explode overnight in a vibrant forest of trichoderma.

I could be completely wrong mind you. It could still fruit. Just 1 anonymous individual's opinion here.

When I saw this happen, it was either straw that had been under-pasteurized or sterilized. I can't remember which.

If it does fruit, it will be between those large tufts of cauliflower btw, not on them.

sorry to ramble, just want to ask a couple more questions...

did the verm get sterilized before it was used to patch? At what point was it sprinkled onto the surface?

And how big is that tub? Looks pretty darn big in contrast to the smaller one on the left. A tub that size is going to need a fair amount of oxygen during colonization. How much did it have?

He says the tub is 1ft wide and 2 ft long. Yes the verm was sterilized. Not sure if you can see but anywhere there isn't anything growing fluffy is knots. So this is what he did. Give me your input please. he took the substrate out of the container and put it on a little bowl just as you would a pf cake. And the shotgun container is 32"x19" x13"..with about 4" of perlite on the bottom. He has done this alot but this is the first time this has ever happened to him. He usually takes his bulk substrate out of the containers and fruits as if you would a pf cake, but just this 1 time he decided to try and leave it inside the container and set the container on the perlite(this is his problem isn't). Since he isn't using a mono he should just fruit them like pf cakes correct??

It's not a bad idea, since the sides might have a better chance at pinning.

That cauliflower vegetation on top just doesn't ever pin.

While you have it out you can inspect it for signs of contamn / soft spots / or rusty colored spots.
