Grain Problems
    #1354578 - 03/06/03 10:53 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

My friend seems to be having a problem with using rye grain. He followed the Sporeworks tek but still not a sign of colonization afer a month. The temps are a little low in the UK but he doesn't have a problem with the PF cakes (as you can see by the avitar). Has any one any idea what could be going wrong.

I hate to say it, but it seems to me that after a month, you might be well and truly fucked. SWIM's WBS jars (keep in mind SWIM's only done them once, so they're far from experienced) showed growth after about 4 days, and were fully colonized in 14. The issues that come to mind are as follows:
Did you wait long enough to inoculate (too hot)?
Does the jar have an odd smell that would indicate contamination?
Are there signs of growth of anything ?
Are you positive that the spores you used were viable?

This is far from comprehensive but maybe it will be a good starting point. In the grand scheme of things, all you really lost was a little time, a little grain, and some spore solution (or whatever you used to inoculate). You can start anew very easily. Good luck with everything!
