Slowed Mycelium Growth
    #1354000 - 03/06/03 07:05 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I'm a first timer though i've helped friends before with projects i know very little. We used standard rice/vermiculite pf tek with quantities doubled for pint jars. For the first week everything was fine with roughly 40% of the jars colonized after 6 days. Now after 20 days the growth has slowed and only 55% of the jars colonized. There are no visible contaminents but he beginning to worry, there is still growth just very slowly. Should he rehydrate the jars or wait it out? If he waits how much longer could this take and if hydration is necessary how much? Thanks ahead for any help.

Lack of air exchange can cause jars to stall. Are they able to breathe?

Not really sure what ya mean, like i said i'm a first timer. But the lids are on tight with the holes on the cap retaped. What would you recommend i do to let them breathe?

turn them upside down and take the tape off of the holes.
this lets carbon dioxide to drain out and fresh air to come in.

If you feel your incubator is a clean place :smirk:, you can remove the tape. Do your jars have verm layers on top?

keep them upside down overnight, that should be enough.

How big are your holes? If you made them with a nail, or whatever, just remove the tape from two of the holes and leave it off. Make sure the inside of your incubator is a sterile environment, though. Get a second opinion too. Actually, sorry, listen to harry manback. If your stuff is a little dry leaving the tape off could be bad. Flipping displaces Co2 immediately, so you can set them upright and put the tape back on after doing so.

used a knife and made the holes just small enough for the syringe to pass through. would any of this cause the jars to lose moisture?
