Mosquitoes in Coco Coir?
    #1351552 - 03/05/03 04:21 AM (21 years, 29 days ago)

I know this sounds really stupid, but I can't think of any other explination. A FOF lives in Wisconsin, and we were just hit with about a foot of snow last night. So, one would think that mosquitoes wouldn't be a problem for awhile.

Well, today he cracked open some coco coir for the first time, and soaked it. He became sidetracked and had to let the big bowl of coco coir and water sit there for a few hours.

Then, all of a frickin sudden he sees a big fat mosquito flying around his room.

Is it possible that the mosquito was preserved in the block of coco coir? Are their any tropical mosquito-transmitted diseases he needs to worry about?

Very strange none-the-less and I thought someone here might enjoy. (or at least be able to explain)

Assumong the coir was Sahara desert bone dry when you started, a mosquito (or larva) would not survive in the coir. It must have came from somewhere else.

Are you sure it wasn't a tiny little bitty spore fairy..................................

oops... if it was the spore fairy, I guess he shouldn't have squished it.

I figured it was too dry (and compacted) too, however I have NO idea where it came from.

Very odd... an adult mosquitoe has to come from larva which live in water.  You can see them with the naked eye... they swim around under water and look a bit bigger than the adults (at least the ones I see around here... and we have lots of them).  I believe it takes a few days before the larva turn into adults, but I cannot remember for sure how long.  An egg may have lived in the coir, but not any other stage.  From egg to adult takes at least a few days (I think), and standing water for the larva to hang out within.

Look for any pools of standing water that is out of direct sunlight.  Old tires are a favorite.  Inside, potted plants that collect water in the pan at the bottom, a toilet that hasn't been used in a while, etc.

They are also very good at hiding in dark places and hitching rides.  You might have brought one in from the grocery store that was hanging out in a bunch of bananas or flowers.

Only the females bite.  They must digest blood in order for their eggs to mature.  No blood, no eggs.  The males die quickly after mating.  I wouldn't worry too much about getting sick or diseased.  They must bite an infected person, or in some cases an infected animal, and then bite you to transfer anything.  Only certain diseases can be transfered this way.

I live in the tropics.  After moving here I would be covered in welts from those horrid insects.  After being here for a while, you tend to build an immunity to them.  I donno why... maybe it is all the alcohol, the food, or perhaps the tourist just smell better.  Anyway, with the zillions of bites I have had, I have not gotten anything.  (Knock on wood )
