Netflix movies - "availablity unknown"

Why are some Netflix movies marked "availability unknown"? The "Saved DVDs" section of my queue should be reserved for DVDs that haven't come out yet. But they also include DVDs that are listed, but aren't available to send out. Some of them, I had gotten from Netflix before and sent back. Now that I have a DVD burner, I want them again, but I can't get them. That first happened with the latest Wesley Willis documentary "Joyrides", but now I want to get the "Isle Of Wight Festival 1970" DVD again and it says "availability unknown". Wtf. If the one copy you have is lost or damaged and you're not getting it back, say so. Don't tease me by listing the DVD on the site and then not letting me ever have it.

It's called people keep them, and Netflix is too cheap to go buy another copy.We tend to watch older cult classics, and they never have them.

So I guess they definitely are not ever getting those DVDs again.

a lot of the things on there like that dont have dvd distribution deals through the normal channels.
my favorite movie of all time is The American Astronaut.
the ONLY place that you can get the dvd is on the directors website. its had that "Save to queue" button for years now.
unfortunately, Netflix is too big of a company to go after those little obscure films.
another good one that comes to mind off the top of my head is Don't Worry, I'm Fine. the girl who played Shoshana in Inglourious Basterds is in that. such a fantastic film that no one knows about..

Why even add it to the Netflix site if they have no intention of getting it?

a lot of times they did have it at one point but lost it.. fuckin customers.
id assume, in situations like The American Astronaut, the director didnt feel like they were getting a return on their investment enough to justify sending them another package of dvds.
but who knows...

They might also put movies up there and whether they get them or not depends on how many people add it to their queue or some shit.
Or maybe they just like to have a good database of movie information.
Or maybe they like it to look like they're trying their hardest to have an amazing collection even though they're never going to do anything about acquiring certain movies.

That's what I assume is the situation. But who knows how much demand it will take to get them to buy new DVDs, now that they're moving away from hard copies.
