My Grandpa ransacked Hitler's Eagle's nest, almost 65 years ago
#13521415 - 11/21/10 08:06 PM (13 years, 4 months ago) |

So my grandma passed away recently, and my parents are in the process of going through all her old things, divvying up the valuable things between our extended family and what not. Amongst the things they found buried away in her garage was an old box of my grandpa's with a bunch of crazy WWII memorabilia, including....
A handwritten letter from Eva Braun to Hitler, circa 1938.
We're all kinda freaking out right now. We have no idea what it says because it's in German, but we're gonna get a translator and have them take a look.
Basically, my Grandpa was a bad-ass.

Not illegal apparently. Apparently if it's real it probably worth a few grand. You should post a picture of it! I watch Antiques Roadshow a lot, I can probably tell you if it's real . Jk about that, but a pic would be cool.

yeah so my uncle's holding onto it for now, but i'll get to see it on thanksgiving, I'll post some pics then.
It's two pages long, really beautifully written German, we're all very excited to see what it says.
8 grand for the last one, in 1988?? I have a feeling this could be big, monetarily and possibly historically.

not to be unexpected because it's the last known, the most recent of letters they know about, it could very well be near the end of the war, she could be relating any number of things to hitler, especially feelings of fear
if yours is from 1938 and the text of the letters compared you may be able to see the decline in her mental health

That's really amazing. Any idea what unit he was with? The first troops to reach the eagles next were french troops followed by C/506th so I'm guessing he was with them. Even though its from 1938 before the war really even began it still will be worth something.
My grandpa brought back some stuff home from the war with him too the most interesting things were a Luger and several polaroids of the concentration camps they liberated. He passed away in june and i think most of his stuff got donated to museums.
Its sad to think that the greatest generation of Americans are slowly dying off and very soon there will be none left.

Okay guys I got to look at all the things yesterday night after Thanksgiving dinner with the family. We're pretty sure the letter is legitimate but we have yet to get it translated or looked at by someone who knows their shit. I'll get pics up as soon as I can, don't have the time now though.
Peace!

If it's legit, I'd probably hang onto for a while. There's no way I would sell that thing right away.
Both of my grandfathers were in WWII. One of them had his leg blown off from stepping on a mine as they were walking back to their camp after taking over some sort of enemy camp. The exact details escape me at the moment.
My moms brother has a knife my other grandfather used in war that was passed on to him. A German apparently came up behind him trying to stab him. They wrestled for a while, until my grandfather got control of the knife, stabbed the German, and took the knife as proof. Just holding it was epic

damn, that's an amazing story about the knife!!
My Uncle's got work friends in Germany so we're waiting for that to get it translated. There's no way I could type it out, it's written in super neat cursive that's pretty hard to decipher just the letters themselves.
And we're definitely not rushing to sell it or anything like that, we'll most likely donate it to a museum or something.

So my cousin go it translated and here's the email he sent my Dad:
My friend,
I just got the translation from this old lady in Hanover. It is her job translating old stuff like this letter, so she is 100% sure what she translated.
First, this letter isn't a letter from Eva Braun to Adolf Hitler. It is a letter from Eva Braun's brother to her. BUT (if you check Wikipedia) Eva Braun had just 2 sisters, no brothers. So the letter might be a fake, BUT her younger sister Gretl got married to a SS Officer named Hermann Fegelein and many people say, that Eva and this Hermann guy had an affair. So the letter could be written from this guy, but why did he start the letter then with " My beloved sister" ? It is strange.
Well, you do the math :-)
Here is my translation:
My beloved sister, it is already Wednesday and there is still no letter from you. I suppose you arrived safe at home and I guess after your Sunday-trip to your brother everything is good now. Unfortunately I am not able to come over on Sunday, because just an hour ago I got the message that the tests for the SA Sportsbadge will be on Sunday. But I will try to come over already on Friday and stay till Sunday morning, but I can't promise.
I would like to talk about last Sunday. Sister, I don't know what was wrong with me. I think about it a lot and I am ashamed. I guess you will forget it and hope you see the old brother in me as usual. I have read a book a few years ago called "Son of the Hagar" and I figured out that I have a lot in common with this guy. For example I must not think of the serious of live. I just can think from today to tommorrow. As soon as I think one day further I screw it up. I don't wanna say, that I srewed it up on Sunday, I just wanna say, that yout brother thought to far again. I would like to stop that and I would like to tell you, that I really like you....I like you too much.
Up here, probably like in Salzburg, the smily sky turned into a crying sky (it started raining-Red). The Führer (Adolf Hitler-Red) stays a few days longer and as I started this letter he returned from a long walk. On Sunday you didn't miss anything, because the Führer didn't leave the house. But on Monday he invited a few girls from Linz to come here for coffee. If you would be here, you have had tasted the Flowercoffee on the Berghof (Hitler Residence - Red). But you will get the chance to taste it soon.
I hope I get a letter back from you very soon.
Please say Hi to all your beloved folks from your brother
"Heil Hitler"
So there you have it! not exactly what we thought it was, but still pretty amazing!
