bubbler glass/jar in substrate?
    #1351753 - 03/05/03 05:43 AM (21 years, 29 days ago)

Hello. This guy I know was wondering if putting a small drinking glass into his substrate on the edge of his bulk-incubator/fruiting-chamber tek bin would be problematic in any way. Instead of having an air hose possibly dry out the substrate or casing in one spot, he would put an air stone in a glass of h2o/h2o2, thus adding a little humidity too. He asumes, as long as the glass is sterile, that this would be okay. He was also wondering if 4" (eight 1\2" diameter holes) total for air exchange would be excessive for an 18 gal. Rubbermaid. Any opinions, advice, etc. are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

it sounds like you're describing a bubbler where an aquarium pump goes into a container of water. my friend uses this method and nothing for air exchange and humidity increase. but don't but the glass *into* the substrate.

He has two air pumps (a four and a five-way), and is hoping, @ 1 hr three times a day, this will provide adequate air exchange for 3 bins. No air exchange or rh increase for you at all?

sorry, that should be "and nothing else". for my friend's fruiting container size, the aquarium pump into a baking dish of perlite water (perlite floating in water) keeps rh at around 87. the pump runs 15 minutes on/off 24/7 which may be overkill but my friend is very happy with the results and would not change anything.

Thanks, Bilge. The baking dish is a nice idea. The guy I know really has no alternative to putting the glass in the substrate, though, as it will be covering the bottom of his bins, aside from taping the glass to the side. Dunno

ah, okay. so you may want to consider the "offical" bubbler, which (as i understand) is our bubbler, but it is closed and a hose leaves it and only the hose enters the fruiting container. i have seen a good link describing it with pictures but i can't find it.

what i would do is take a quart jar, drill two holes in the top -just- large enough for the hose. one piece of hose goes from pump through lid to air stone in water. the other end comes out of the top of the jar (not in the water), through the hole and into the fruiting chamber. humidity might not be so high since you won't get the "ambient" humidification of the wet perlite, but you won't have to mess with putting something into the substrate. many options, i'm sure you get the idea.

Okay, right. This would definitely work, but the guy was wondering why a completely sterile drinking glass, or mason jar, maybe w/ a layer of perlite on top of the h20/h2o2, couldn't be placed directly into the substrate in the bin. He thought a clean jar would act no differently than the sides of the bin. This way there would be the rh boost.

yeah, it might be okay. the first problem that comes to mind is the use of clear glass might cause pins to form underneath the bubbler. if you used an opaque container you might be better off. i'd have some concern about bubbling water dripping over into the substrate, but a higher rim and/or lower water level could help prevent that.

The guy will pay mind to the water level and make sure the jars (he guesses they'll have to be quarts) are on the bottom of the bins to prevent under-pinning. Thanks for all the help, Bilge.

Has anyone tried something like this before?
