this is the early of the earliest and technically does mark the very beginning of the fall 2010 winter 2011 San Francisco season because these oysters are a common fall fruiter
but these planters are shady all day and heavily watered. however, it's now dark enough and just about cool enough at night for fruiting. One thing is that during the summer this entire garden was dug up and put into planter boxes to make it look nicer because of complaints. people complained because it was just dug up sidewalk, and now they have nice raised planters. But that was 3 months ago and the oyster mycelium recovered nicely
this is one of those public community gardens near Potrero Hill that uses public space and they donate the food, including these oysters to food banks
It's getting close now...gonna start checking the wetter watered cyan patches pretty soon

well, they really messed with the mycelium 3 months ago..they dug up the whole thing and put it in a big pile, then built the planters and dumped it back in, so most of the mycelium got really fragmented into tiny pieces. I was there when they did it
you can't see it, but that dirt has a lot of little bits of chips inside, plenty to eat for the oysters
it's just that the mycelium had to re-connect and find it's way to the surface again
who knows, the whole thing could explode this year..there's 3 big planters like that, and all of them were planted with oysters 2 years ago when it was started

I forgot to mention that this garden, among others known as 'guerilla gardens' are now approved and endorsed by the mayor of San Francisco
this is what the Hooper st garden looked like originally, on the blog by the San francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA blog)
http://blog.sfmoma.org/2009/06/the-garden-as-protest/
at the time, Robyn Waxman planted the oyster mycelium at the bottom of the chip pile, suggested to her by a friend, as a way of cleaning up the toxins, because it was a former industrial site. That was originally a concern, but you can see if you scroll down the photos the cardboard mats they put in underneath the wood chip piles
see, now it's a year later, and the oysters have already gone through a full fruiting cycle, been dug up completely during the summer, replanted in planter boxes with fresh chips and dirt, and lots of people ate them last season with no ill effects at all
I met Robyn this summer when they were digging it all up for the new planter boxes. She was absolutely amazed that these oysters proliferated the way they did..Now it's 3 months later and it's starting again, and she doesn't even live in the city anymore, so her legacy continues on, and probably will for years
there also is no reason why any other wood chip species like p cyanescens couldn't be included in a guerrilla garden like this
