Alternative boots to the Vasque Sundowner
    #13514490 - 11/20/10 01:21 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I'm in the market for a good pair of boots and was eyeballing this pair of Vasque's.

After reading a lot of reviews though, apparently after the company started making their boots in China instead of Italy the quality took a steep nosedive. You can't even resole the Chinese versions, and a lot of the reviews spoke of prolonged discomfort.

I'm sure you guys have more knowledge in the ways of the boot than I, so any suggestions on good alternatives?

You say you want to be yourself, do you think they'll let you?
They're out to get you.

I have loved all the Danner boots(mid/high top hikers) and shoes I have owned. Even the ones made in China lasted until I wore out the sole. I tend to walk funny and slowly grind away the inner side of the heal making my shoes an uneven platform to stand in. I rarely have more than one pair of shoes so they end up being my casual daily shoes and my hikers. They tend to last me a year to a year and a half. In fact my last pair is still in great condition after a year and a half, except where I destroyed the heal. I guess I have to learn to walk proper.

Those Vasques are the exact boot I have.  I had a pair that lasted well over a decade. They had to be replaced and I got a new pair about a year and a half ago.  I have no complaints about the comfort.  My new pair are every bit as comfortable as the old ones ever were.  As for durability and longevity...well its too early for me to tell.  I haven't been doing as much hiking as I did in the late 90's when I got the first pair.  But so far everything is fine with them.  I don't know how long ago they started manufacturing them in China.

My old pair and my new pair in May of '09

I have been rocking a pair of sundowners for 4 years now. I have very low volume feet and found that adding a pair of superfeet insoles work magic. If you like that style and don't like the manufacturing ,look up zamberline boots from Italy.
