Will it still work in my substrate? Will the spores actually colonize, it shouldnt make a difference, should it?

It will work, it may be harder to get the water content right, and you might have to use a PC to sterilize.

This is a horrible idea for 2 reasons:
1) The reason that you ground up the BR before-hand is to help the fungus to more easily get at the fat that is in the BRF. If you just dump plain rice in, it will be much harder for the fungus to get at the fat in the center of the rice. 2) The substrate formulas are all designed for BRF.
This has been done before I am sure. However, you must remember that this would take alot longer for the fungus to break it down anf the longer the fungus takes, the more pron to contams your substrate is.

the first time my friend grew mushrooms, he cooked some regular brown rice, spooned into some jars, and squirted some spores in. worked Great..even better than brf/verm cakes.

So let me get this straight, he cooked some rice, spooned it into jars, then added spores? No sterilization? Whaaaaaa???????

yes, does the horribleness of this idea apply to all whole grains or just brown rice? if it applies to all whole grains, my friend will have to throw out the piles of shrooms he's grown because they shouldn't exist. bummer.

not really any sterilization...just sanitary working conditions. *just clean* that's all you really need.

I am amazed that you grew mycelium without sterilization. I really am. Meanwhile, I PC the fuck out of WBS and every single damn jar contaminated. I mean sure, it may stem from the fact that I neglected them during colonization and when I finally did check there was about a 1/8 inch of standing water in the cooler from the jar holding the aquarium heater.......but whatever..

i'm amazed too..plus it was his first try, about 4 years ago. he turned off the a/c. soaked some drinking glasses in clorox and water. cooked some brown rice in the rice cooker. took the glasses out and put them upside down on some fresh paper towels. and got some squares of aluminum foil ready to cover the glasses.
when the rice was done, using swift movements and holding his breath, he spooned the rice in real light and nice. then covered each with the foil squares. he incubated on a closet shelf. no heaters. then he dumped them into a styrofoam cooler and misted daily.
some people just make shit harder than it really is. i think the shrooms from the whole, all brown rice were the most potent ever made. and he tried alot of different ways.

Ive experimented with brown rice grain a few times and think its a perfectly good grain to use. My only problem is I find it does take a lot longer to colonize compared to rye or millet.
Ive also had problems getting the water content right, however it seems to work fine if I soak the rice grain for 24 hours in cold water and then sterylise for 45 - 60 minutes.
