Humidiity issue
    #1350155 - 03/04/03 01:04 PM (21 years, 29 days ago)

He wants to know about humidity. He has read that perlite run under water then strained works well enough to keep cakes well enough at a humidity level to fruit. He wants to know if this would be enough or if he should get some type of humidifying device to help things out?

That should be enough to provide adequate humidity.

My friend puts down a 3/4" layer of perlite, covers with water and h2o2 (1:10 ratio) until water level is at the top of the perlite. Then he puts down another 1" of perlite on top.

IMO, straining is unecessary.

Like closet case said make sure your water level is half of what the perlite level is and ounce they are in the fruiting chamber make sure you fan atleast 3 times a day.

Why? Straining is easier to get the water content right and its not quite as messy. I don't like the dust that dry perlite produces, and if you pour dry perlite into your terrarium then add water, you will have all the perlite dust accumulate on your terrarium walls.

But hey, different strokes.......

because some of the perlite would fall through the holes in my cheap plastic strainer   I guess the $15 for a nice mesh strainer makes it "uneccessary".

It is quite messy, but my friend has still had excellent results.

Oh I don't doubt that you can have success with that method, but in most situations, there is more than one way to skin a cat, and I when I'm skinning cats, I don't like it to get messy.
