Mailbag pressure is much more relevant for packages than letters.

my shiitake wedge pack that made it unharmed, was designed different from the hen of the woods that popped. The shiitake was packed full with a giant wedge and barely any air. That ziplock sealed around it was also almost double the size of the hen of the woods. The hen of the woods didnt have any where for the air bubble to go. maybe just a bigger baggie is the answer, or no air.
Also taping the wedges down to the sketch paper will keep them from stacking on top of each other. making it even thicker and more likely to pop. I hope all this makes sense.

Either way nothing else is going out for the time being lol. If we have made a TRADE and it does not reach you ok, pm me an we will get you a wedge another more expensive way. If you got a wedge from a giveaway and it did not reach you, I am sorry wait for when I figure this out and claim another wedge. It HAD to go this way, couple wedges make it, let my guard down now they are all getting squished and some people are all up in arms about the FREE wedge they did not receive. To everyone else who has been cool and understanding, thanks, and you will be first on the list when this is all figured out.

For now at least, lot of people have been understanding and realize that its outside of my control and regardless of the results I did put in my TIME EFFORT and MONEY to spread wedges around. I got a little to excited with the test results and jumped the gun. You live you learn, I will be looking into other methods, perhaps the cardboard idea you spoke about Doc. Either way I will regroup and try again at a later date.
Total Plate that gooo! lol

Hey EM,
We are all learning from your efforts, and they are appreciated for that alone, not to mention your generosity in trying.
I was thinking about trying your method when the Shaggy Mane has grown out (it has started to grow on the plates that I made).
...but having caught up on this thread, I have to rethink my method. I might just do the handmade-specialty-dish-holder that I made from cardboard for the Shitake.
I will happen, one way or the other.
Take care,
JD

The dish you sent me was expertly packaged I must say that I was impressed. Great method, but also kind of expensive to send out multiple dish's. I will most definatly be stealing your method in the future to send plates!
They say a mistake is not a mistake if you learn from it....helps me sleep at night lol.

Did you guys take some picture on how you packaged your plates? Thank for your time.

Well, for my part, I love what is called around here "ghetto-tek"...
I just cut two squares of carboard that were just large enough that a small square (~ 1-2") of cardboard, glued to each corner, would leave space for the dish to fit between these four "corner squares". I glued about 3 or 4 such squares to each corner of one of the larger cardboard pieces, put the dish onto the result, and then glued the matching larger piece of cardboard onto the assembly.
I ended up with a cardboard square that protected the interior space as well as cardboard is going to do.
...but it did make it safely to Canada, and EM666.
Good luck,
JD

Oh. Sorry.
There I thought I was making sense. LOL.
I ended up with something that looked like three optical disk cases stacked.
Except that it had a hollow center that the dish fit into.
I went into a ramble about how I made this hollow space.
A rough rendering of the side view:
Code:
XXXXXXXXXXXXX <---- outer large piece of cardboard XX XX <---- Inner small squares of cardboard XX XX <---- Inner small squares of cardboard XX XX <---- Inner small squares of cardboard XXXXXXXXXXXXX <---- outer large piece of cardboard
Rather than the small squares at the four corners, a better solution would be to cut a circle that just fits around the dish into the three middle pieces of cardboard.
HTH,
JD

Another 2 wedges made it O.K to the U.S. Little squished but the seal was intact and there is visible mycelium from what I gathered. Weird how some get through some do not Thanks for everyone's understanding. There is still another 10-15 wedges enroute so there is still more test data to come back.

I wonder if different places have different equipment? Obviously yes, but I'm wondering if certain sorting centers (Chicago, Atlanta) use bigger badder devices. It would be interesting to send enough samples to get some data, but kind of pricey to do just for fun.
I like the idea of a piece of cardboard with a cutout, that might leave enough room to avoid splashing. Tape it gently in place so it doesn't move around in the envelope.

Not a bad theory on bigger badder sorting devices at certain sorting centers or mail hubs. Im thinking of giving this another go with some sort of taped cardboard window as suggested, as well as a few other methods. See what works and what does not and perhaps on a smaller scale to start. I will most likely use those who have not received a wedge intact as clearly it goes through a death machine on the way to certain members. We shall see!
