Here comes the molds....

3 months ago my buddy made 3 casings out of BRF and Verm. He used straight verm to case. He was pretty careless in terms of sterility. Such as, he opened the lid without spraying lysol in the air first, didn't use H202 in his humidifier or aqua bubbler. Breathed on the casing, and such. Never had any problems with green mold until about the 3rd or 4th flush. Now he is using birdseed and a peatmoss/verm/ oyster shell mix for the casing. He popped those into the terrarium and now they are getting all kinds of contams, cobweb, green, and the such. They haven't even reacdhed the 1st flush. What's going on? He did note that the casing was wetter than it should have been.

I think you answered your own question. casings shouldn't be made of uncolonized substrate only non nutritive elements. Casings act as a moisture source and and contam barrier, thats all.

i think you mis-read his post (or i did). it probably should read:

"Now he is using birdseed, and a peatmoss/verm/ oyster shell mix for the casing"

birdseed is the substrate, casing material is 50/50 with oyster shell. but we all have another chance to read it again as the same thing is posted at least 3 different ways.

IME, if 50/50+ (minus the lime, in your case) is too wet it can be prone to trich.
