Habitat: Growing in Grass near the edge of concrete, no close trees. Desert weather but it's been moist lately, cooler too, freezing at nights. Altitude is valley floor, 4800ft. Looked like it was either feeding off the soil the grass is in or the grass itself.
Gills: Gills looked free, white/superlight tan.
Stem: Thick stem, tan in color, no noticeable bruising.
Cap: Larger mushroom, a few inches across, thick and meaty, tan in color with whitish tna gills. Texture is similar to that of a portabella. Cap was wavey.
Spore print color: White or Tanish, print isnt' finished and it's not dark enough yet to tell, will know in the AM.
Bruising: Didn't notice bruising, if there is, it's a slight tanning.
Other information: Did not smell very good. I don't believe it's edible, most likely toxic, but I want to find out if it's an amanita species or something different. It didn't have the vulva that most have however, so I'm having my doubts and have no idea what it is. It isn't an agaric as far as I know, it's got whitish gills, and that print it started dropping was either white or tan.
I'm just curious to what it might be. Here are some photos.

No. Scopes are often needed to determine species. Did you taste it?

Not at all, there are non-edible russulas, lpus I don't even know if it's a russula because it looks like it could also be a clitocybe species or a larger inocybe species. Most likely it's a russula, I'm sporeprinting it and going to try to do a tissue clone, but they are symbiotic with plants apparently? I might be able to culture mycelium though.

Tasting mushrooms will not harm you, as long as you spit it out. Just a little nibble goes a long way in identifying.

Hmm, I'll try that, It's in a fridge at my friend's house. He was going to scrap it so the dogs didn't eat it.

It does look a bit like Tricholoma. And since you said it smelled bad that points in that direction. Check the texture of the stem, Russula stems snap like chalk and Tricholoma stems are more fiberous. What kind of trees were nearby? Can you describe the odor? Also check the taste.
If you have access to a microscpe check the spores, all Russulas have spiky spores.

Odor was like dirt, it had a very fibrous stem. I didn't see any trees nearby, however we have some elm trees, possible shrub-height ones in the next door yard that we cannot see.
