A couple nice mushroom pix
    #1348506 - 03/03/03 06:56 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys, here are some pictures of some various fungi which I stumbled upon today in the woods. Nothing of great interest here today, but, CLICK ON THE PICTURES to enlarge.....!!!!   They are nice quality!

Here is a suspected marasmius species.

A black fluted elfin saddle.

Peziza vesiculosa..."The common dung cup". I found a ton of these at my manure pile, however, THIS might be a close relative...Maybe a "P. repanada".

A puffball  Before and after squeezing! You can see the spore deposit in the air, sorta... hehe

A Suillus species

And a white mushroom, I am unsure of

Thanks Blaze and concretefeet, I appreciate your comments!

Flipped, well, the one I have is kinda expensive, it ranges from $850-$1,100. I highly recommend the Sony cybershots however. They have great macro features.

Check out: http://www.dpreview.com to check out some digital camera reviews. The Sony P-5, P-7 and P-3 are good. Im sure you can get a 2.5-3.0 megapixel for your price range.

My camera is here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscf717/

Plato,

I mean, you can practically read my fingerprints in the puffball picture!

The macro range for the camera is 2cm to 50cm, so you can take pictures about 2cm away, and even zoom in if you wanted to.

Okay, I'll do that for you next time i go hunting. Lemme see if I can dig something up around here that has a really good macro shot for you

OKay, here is a picture of my ring...

and a picture of a good bill. This had to be reduced to 800X600, and reduced the quality by 50%. The original was fucking awsome.

As usual, very nice.

Based on what I've heard from Nancy Smith Weber, that cup fungus is going to be pretty tough to ID accurately. It might even be a Gyromitra (although I'd guess Peziza first, too).

On the puffball being squeezed - yeah, you can see the little chunks of spore mass in the air (in the detailed version). Way cool.

At first guess I'd probably put the white ones in Clitocybe. But there are a number of similar mushrooms to those, and even getting the right genus can be tough sometimes.

Is the gills closeup photo the same mushroom as the white ones?

Happy mushrooming!

Damn you and your mushrooms! I just went out and walked around in the woods for a bit, nothing to be found but some lichens and some tiny shelf fungi. :frown: It needs to warm up, damnit.

ToxicMan -- Yes, I had read something about how the cup fungi is pretty hard to ID, without a microscope. It looks so similar to the ones I found on my dung pile, but, I must admit there definetly some slight variation.... I didn't have my book next to me, nor did I really look at it much to really make a good guess.

As far as the white ones being Clitocybe, that would probably be a good guess. Like the cup fungi, I didn't pick it or really look at it much, just took a picture and kept walking. There were some more matured ones which were a lot bigger, and spread open, and looked like the ones below:

I took this picture earlier this winter, this mushroom was growing from a side of an oak tree. It is definetly NOT the same species, just using it as a reference.

GumbyDude -- Dude, I was suprised to find these mushrooms actually. Its been really dry here lately, as there has been only like one small rain in about a month. Temps have been TOO warm, and the humidity has been pretty low. The coastal mountains which usually keep all the fog in overnight have been clear, with not much humidity. The end of my season is coming to an end. :frown: I can't wait to see some of your pix this summer!!!

Looks great, as usual Angry.

nice camera once again...

I'd post some, but my images are too big :/
have to shrink to near thumbnail to fit it... and compressing just sucks

OK, angry, I should have gone ahead and looked it up...

I think your Peziza is Helvella acetabulum. That stem on the bottom is fairly distinctive. I noticed it in my book when I started studying a bit to get ready for the spring season coming up. Certainly one of the cooler cup fungi.

Happy mushrooming!

ToxicMan- Great!!! I looked it up, and its for sure what I found. Whats funny is that I found some of black fluted elfin saddles growing real close. So, two Helvella species in about a 4 yard diameter.

Thanks for posting that!!

Seril- You know that compressing doesn't mess with them TOO much! My original pictures are 650-900kb each!! I get them down to 100-150kb....only a some quality is loss. Depends on the picture really.
