I think it's a shame that this kind of art is illegal. It is reasonably so, but still, I think street art is some of the most beautiful art that you will find around.

i agree that there is defintally some great art in the graffiti scene.
but i can also see it from the point of view of joe citizen, for the most part all they see is the scribblings of some asshole 14 year old who got a sharpie and tagged their name on a road sign or a bus seat ect.

they dont necessarily see the murals and pieces like this that take true talent and skill. i wish there was some sort of graffiti ok zone where people could do murals and graffiti in public parks, maybe blank walls that get painted over every month?

They have been doing that in certain cities, some newer housing projects allow graffiti on one or more walls. It certainly livens up the scene, and its pretty cool to see the talent range from the amateur to the professional.

It's not illegal as long as it's on your own property.  I'd be pissed if someone tagged up my car wouldn't you?

Like all art some if it is amazing, I have seen some good ones around town here,

I can really identify with Banksy's work:

That's what it's all about...
Expression at its finest.

I don't like it when people don't step back to appreciate 'street' art like hip hop music and graffiti. Honestly, hip hop is one of the greatest forms of art that has come out of this shithole of a country. It comes from jazz, and alongside jazz it is one of very few things that we can call completely American.

These people make no money from their work, their work would be rejected from fine art museums, yet it is "art" to photograph this graffiti, frame it, and stick it in a museum exhibit on the perils and challenges of inner city living? Sickening.

Actually some of those artists make a lot of money from their work through fine art collectors.

No, I'll definitely look into it though, Banksy is a great artist.

And fluxburn, the problem with that statement is that most people consider art to be beyond question.

Don't like this painting? You just "don't get it."
Sorry.

I used to draw graffiti , even paint it on walls . Untill I almost got arrested this one time .. Actually they did arrest me , but they just took me to the station not jail .
I think its art and a way to express yourself .
Every now and then ill draw it on paper , but I lost my passion for it

Grafitis are only good if they got painted by an artist that has been paid for by the owner of the building/wall.

If the grafitis are only to write on something or to put your gang signature, they should be illegal and the perps should be arrestes and charged

I love graffiti, its funny you should mention this as im currently working on producing my 3rd graffiti vid as we speak. Some of the art ive seen around my city is amazing - you stand and stare at it and think 'how the fuck did they produce that with a spray can'. It really is an artform.

Here is one of my previous vids:

Don't want to float my own boat but its pretty much one of the best graffiti compilations on utube.

enjoy.

Our city had a big fundraiser called the "Hip hop don't stop" with live DJ's and graffiti artists from Chi-town out to Denver. Painted a whole side of an abandoned warehouse. They did it again 3 years later to a dance studio down the street.

Then this summer the bastards tore down the warehouse to build an apartment building. Fucking cumwads. I'd post pics but I cant seem to find them

I have always admired graffiti art.  I live in a smaller mid-western town and sense I was a little kid one of my favorite things is to watch a train go by and spot all of the art.  My favorite thing about Bonnaroo the years that I have attended has been the graffiti walls.

I have recently noticed an increase in the artistic quality of the train pieces going through town.  Shit getting really good.  I imagine the majority of the art is coming from Chicago.  Keep it up guys.

ive got tons of mad pics, i recomend any graffiti fans go onto utube and look for "ironlak channel" or ironlak videos. Ironlak is pretty much the worlds best paint company, and they sponsor writing teams from all around the world, it really is top stuff.

They make videos of the murals that get painted around the world, some of its amazing stuff.

yea good graffiti is cool, but when I look around most of it is crappy tagging with just black spray paint of kids tagging their spot. Or stupid gangs in my area tagging everything they can from trash cans to fences. Most are not talented in any way.Sucks they ruin it for the artists, but thats why its illegal and should stay so.

just my opinion

Word man. Graffiti IS ART. Period. I think anyone who truly gets what art is about should be able to appreciate graffiti to some degree.

i agree johnny, i think all of the tags (one colour line scribbles) and bombs (two colour usually cloudy looking rush pieces) should be illegal and stay illegal. No one wants to see just this pieces of crap that just dmg peoples fences and shop fronts etc.

But what i do think should be legalized and encouraged is the artistic side of graffiti. The giant murals, colourful pieces, pictures of commonly known characters, all the good stuff. Even amazing patterns and whatnot, that stuff to me is gold.
