Casing dilema
    #1348316 - 03/03/03 07:31 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I am currently raising 2 kinds of mycelium in 12 jars.  I plan on casing, and i currently have a large 4'x2' rubbermaid with 4 smaller containers to rest inside of it.  I planned on using the separate containers to separate the spieces.  But would i get a larger harvest if i cased the large container without using the smaller ones?  I have been seeing pictures of large rubbermaid casings and they look great.  But will it matter if i have 2 different strains in the same casing?  Thank you.

my understanding is that a "larger harvest" is produced by using more substrate or more nutritious substrate. so i would say that one giant casing -generally- would not produce a larger harvest than the same amount of substrate in multiple casings.

but another issue regarding large vs. small casings is contamination: if 1 casing of 4 contaminates, you throw it away and still have 3. but if 1 casing of 1 contaminates you are probably screwed. imho, it's about having all of your eggs (mushrooms) in one basket (casing).

But will it be ok for 2 different strains to be in 1 casing?  Thanks for your help...

yes.

but you won't be sure which fruits are which strain so i suggest not using them for spore prints.

a few points: 1stly i wouldn't suggest that YOU do any of this. maybe get your neighbor's dog to do it. 2ndly you CAN mix strains in a casing but your better off not doing that IMO. there are distinct advantages of separating your casings as opposed to doing one big one. you will maintain a single strain in each one. the amount of substrate and casing surface area would be equivalent to doing one big one so the yields would be roughly the same. if one casing gets contamed then the other 3 are still good whereas if you put all your eggs in one basket so to speak....
