Recovering Alcoholic/Addict, and saying no to Pot

So after talking to another dispensary about their incoming clone army of Skywalkers, it occurred to me: how have I held out this long, and not smoked any pot? I haven't smoked in around 7 years... and every day, it seems like I'm assaulted by more reasons to take a couple hits. From my chronic pain due to carpal tunnel and insomnia, to walking into pot fume clouds randomly on the streets (this happens more than you'd think), I'm finding it harder and harder to say no. I believe that I'm a recovering addict/alcoholic, due to my past difficulties with alcohol and other drugs, and don't like the thought of falling off of the wagon. But, I live in north/west Los Angeles, one of the best areas in the entire world for good pot, and it's hard resisting temptation. You guys on here don't help, either.
So, does anyone else on here not smoke, and if so, how do you resist the temptation to light up?
Are you a recovering alcoholic, and have you stayed clean off of weed?
*In case you're wondering what I'm doing on this site, I got into mushrooms as a way to have a fun hobby (that let me explore my brain). They aren't addictive, and I don't consider them in any way, shape, or form, a dangerous drug. I use them maybe 3 times per year, if that.

So do you believe marijuana is an addictive, harmful drug?

It's a good question. I try to make a distinction between the two, but to me, it seems like marijuana isn't harmful or physically addictive. It can be mentally addictive, to some, but there are many things that are mentally addictive. Video games, food, sex, this forum. God knows. What I try to think about, more than that, is whether or not pot activates the same chemical pathways in my brain that were involved in my drug/alcohol use. The pleasure centers, or however addiction medicine has defined the parts of our brain involved in addiction and habituation, are what concern me. I've asked 3 doctors, 4 AA groups, my sponsor, and many others... no one has a clear, definitive answer.

I dont smoke weed, I just drink. Not too crazy. Havent had a beer in about 2 weeks. Got a little too drunk on my birthday, need a little break. Anyhow I dont really even enjoy smoking. Makes me uncomfortable. I get too stoned and I get all shaky and fatigued, total anxiety. Dont do any other drugs, quit smoking cigarettes over a year ago. I guess I just dont have an addictive personality. Once your desire to quit something overcomes your desire to use it, its no problem.

That's an interesting perspective on mj/alcohol. As far as defining what an addictive personality is, I'd be hard pressed to do that. I think that there is a huge gray area as far as accurate definitions of addiction are concerned. If you think you're addicted, or have trouble stopping, then I'd say there's potential or actual addiction, there. You don't seem like an addict/alcoholic in any sense of the terms. Good for you Myself, I'm not so sure.

I quit smoking weed about two years ago, i was heavily addicted to marijuanna, i'd have about 3 bong sessions a day. I'd go hang out with one group of friends, smoke a mix, after that go hang out with another group of friends, smoke another mix, and then at night i'd have my own mix in my car listening to tunes alone and then go to bed. It got to the point where i didn't want to socialise anymore or even hang out with friends and jsut started smoking by myself, but luckily i broke the cycle and haven't smoked for 2 years now, i'm over it completely and am not tempted by it at all. The toughest part was trying to quit when all my friends smoke weed, because i'm constantly surrounded by it.
I don't know i just go to the point where i was like i don't want to be doing this anymore its not healthy, i wasn't enjoying smoking i was coughing up all sorts of feral crap, so i decided to make a change and luckily it worked out for me.
I think if you've come this far sober then why stop now? you seem to be doing well as you are, so it sounds like a good idea to stick with that.

From what I've seen in many people (actually everyone) in your position, one thing leads to another. Its typical addict behavior really. Oh I'm not doing XX bad thing, I'm just doing this one little harmless thing. Then that slowly (or quickly) becomes a regular thing. Then it isn't enough and you go searching for what used to work really good (aka your old addiction).
I'd find something else to fill your time and not think about getting high if you're an former addict.

I'd have a hard time arguing with someone to not use Marijuana. I think under the right regiment its highly productive and can be extremely beneficial. Its all about how you use it and when. If you are ripping bongs from morning to night its not going to be as effective for our life as taking a few vape hits throughout the day.
But if you find it'll make you relapse just stay away. Its definitely not worth getting back into shit over. What else are you doing with your life? Do you meditate, exercise, write, read? You need to fill your time with something that will help not hurt.

weed isnt physically addictive. SWIM used it to fight off cravings form amphetamine addiction. SWIM believes he could not have got off that horrible drug without the help of THC.

I think weed is totally physically addictive, if your really addicted to it you cant sleep without being high. Amphetamine addiction is a fair bit worse though.

yeah i remember not being able to sleep or eat without weed...
its nothing compared to a serious dope habit tho...my lord.
i think weed is safe...i am a recovering addict myself and i still enjoy jdubs and weed when i can..on probation now so i gotta be clean, but when i am off i will smoke weed again. i am not worried about it leading me to dope at all.
thc is the drug for me!

The same can be said for someone who masturbates before bed every night.

weed is most definitely NOT physically addictive. anyone that has had withdrawals from actual addictive substances knows what i'm talking about.

Why do you have to stay clean off pot? Does it affect or cause you to want to drink more? If that's the case I can understand why you'd want to be off it.

I fucking LOVE WEED
its the perfect thing to balance out people like myself as i am still an addict. Withdrawls are eased by the leafy green and i can even have stints withour dope that last a week or more. I should get totally clean but thats easier said than done. Congrats on being clean.
Marijuana as a plant was created by nature as the Cure everything plant IMO. The amount of uses it has, other than getting you high, is amazing. Also the getting high part isnt too shabby

Thanks for all the replies, everyone. I'm feeling better about saying no. I don't know how, or why, but I get these compulsions. I'm trying to direct my energy towards more healthy activities, now. I don't need pot. It is damned tempting living literally right next door to some of the best dispensaries and pot on the planet. Wouldn't you be tempted if there were OG Kush, Skywalker, Sour Diesel, and Blue Dream all the time next door to your house?
Can even get free delivery. See this menu: http://www.spcdelivery.com/
