Tip jars in odd places

I've noticed over the past few years that tip jars have been showing up in places they never were before. It started with Dunkin Donuts and other places like that. I work for tips and I always take good care of people when I'm out but recently I've seen tip jars in places where it was never customary to tip in the past.
Tonight I was at the market behind my shop buying milk and bread before I went home. The cashier who rang me up had a tip jar on the counter. I've also seen it at a gas station near my house. I always tip the guy who pumps my gas but this place is a self serve station and the cashier has a tip jar at the register. He wants to get tipped for ringing up over priced gas that I pumped myself?
Am I the only one who thinks it's strange for a cashier to get tipped? It's their job to ring people up and in exchange they get a salary. As generous as I am I'm not used to having to tip cashiers. Is this just happening in new york or is it everywhere now? How do you all feel about tipping in these situations?

Well, look at it from the employee's point of view.
Tips jars usually have money in them. Why not put one out and see if someone puts money in it?
I agree with you though. The tipping spectrum keeps expanding. It's kind of bullshit.

I always put something in there because I try to apply the golden rule at all times. I'm just not sure what I'm actually tipping them for. Also, I do imagine myself in there position and I think I would feel uncomfortable and tacky asking for a tip in these situations.

I've known some D&D employees and they have all told me they aren't allowed to take tips.
but I think it evolved from people not wanting their change (coins)

In NY all the DD's have the tip jar out. I'm surprised to hear that some DD's aren't allowed considering it's a chain. I would figure the rules would be the same in all their locations.

I think tipping is stupid in the first place. It should be a show of gratitude for outstanding / extra service, it shouldn't be an industry standard. It gives restaurants a reason to pay all their employees minimum wage, and makes it the customers responsibility to pay that employees salary. Most people who work for tips, Ive found, arent going above and beyond to earn them because its expected - like a seperate tax on your meal.
