Are you a filthy pinko liberal?
    #1347263 - 03/02/03 05:22 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

lib?er?al?ism

a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties

"Virtually every step forward in our [American] history has been a liberal initiative taken over conservative opposition: civil rights, Social Security, rural electrification, the establishment of a minimum wage, colective bargaining, the Pure Food and Drug Act, federal aid to education, guranteed bank deposits, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Park Service, the Voting Rights Act, etc....We need conservatives, of course, to challenge liberal ideas and proposals and to impel us to examine their soundness, but we cannot depend on conservatives to offer constructive new ideas of the sort that might bring about a more just and equitable society or a more peaceful and cooperative world....The business of conservatives is to cling tightly to the past, and although such a stance can be admirable, a stale and musty doctrine is of little use at a time when the nation needs not to fear the future, but to seek out ways to improve it."

--From "The Case for Liberalism" by George McGovern, Harper's Dec 2002

Unfortunatly liberalism is also responsible for some of the evils and great disasters in society, which your article fails to mention.

Who in their right mind would believe that human beings are "essentially" good? I would say that human beings all have the potential for good, but that's about as far as I would be willing to go.

oh god...

this is going to be another one of those "conservative" and "liberal" bashing threads where the "conservatives" dismiss everything "liberals" say, and vice versa... i can feel it.

I'm not bashing liberals. I used to be a died in the forest republican. I used to think everything was black and white when it came to conservatives and liberals. I worked for the republican party doing fundraising for 11 months and it gave me a new perspective on the whole thing. I basically sold business leaders access to big shots. For 5,000 you can take your wife to the president's dinner, and that sort of thing. There are crazies in the republican party and the democrat party. I can attest there are certifiable wack jobs in the republicans donor base. I just can't relate to the republican party anymore. Economically or socially the only thing about them that appeals to me is their pro-life stand, and they even compromise that often too.

Sorry, I didnt intend for that post to single you out- i was just replying to the last msg.

"I used to think everything was black and white when it came to conservatives and liberals."
heh, I know so many people who think that way its disgusting. Its frustrating to try and argue with someone who feels the need to ignore a viewpoint based on their perception of your political affiliation. We would probably be better off in this hemesphere if we could transcend that b.s. and come up with some solutions that arent "liberal" or "conservative"

It's hard to be a liberal or conservative when they both want to put you in prison with thugs and rapists because you have a shoebox in the closet growing a few mushrooms.

Who in their right mind would believe that human beings are "essentially" good?

If you were to study such things, you would find that Confucianism, one of the world's major religions, has this as one of its fundamental beliefs. If you're interested in their arguments I would recommend Mencius (Meng Tzu).
