I have always wanted to go to Alaska or Norway and build my own Log Cabin in the mountains.
You can even chink it with mud.
Here, this 2 odd minute video shows a tiny lady with a very capable mindset. She built her own place by herself.

I think it could be a great idea depending on what sort of jobs you're looking for. There are plenty of countries with up-and-coming economies that have a lot of jobs (especially for english speakers or anyone with an education from the USA. somehow a college degree from the USA is much more valuable than one from elsewhere).
I'm planning on leaving the USA as soon as I can afford a flight out of here and a couple months worth of funds while I look for work. I have a decent education but the economy here is in such a shit hole right now that I can't possibly compete with the thousands of other people who are out of work (who have masters degrees, PHDs, Architecture licenses, and 5-10 yrs experience) who are applying for all the same entry level jobs as I am.
the USA is going downhill fast. I've been looking at work opportunities elsewhere for a while now. The only thing holding me back is the fact that im too broke to go anywhere. Instead of wasting tens of thousands of dollars of my parents money on a useless education, I should have used it to leave this dying country years ago. It seems there's no place for me here. I think I'll have to find a way to make a living someplace else. Its likely going to be 5+ years before enough of the jobless millions of older, more experienced, better educated people find work so recent graduate, entry level job seekers can stand a decent chance at landing a job we can support ourselves on.

pretty cool but it looks like strictly a summer cabin. no insulation? you'd freeze to death in that shack come winter in alaska or norway. not to mention finding food and water in the dead of winter with feet of snow on the ground and rivers that are frozen over. definitely not a permanent living situation.

yeah, I have friends in both areas and would definitely be staying with them through the long winter or until I got a home built that could withstand the elements....prolly coulda mentioned that.
I am a long way from accomplishing this dream. Most likely my first cabin will be in Georgia, NC or Tennessee. That is something that will be happening in my near future.

While just picking up and leaving seems like a cool idea, you have to remember that if you are travelling to a foreign country you'll need a visa to live and get a proper job there(in most cases.) That isn't always an easy task. I know they are very strict about who they give visas to here in the UK. You either need to be married or have a work visa for a job you already have here.

What? Why not? Being happy is being happy.
For real man, I would be sop happy if a few things were gotten.... like a house a car whatever
It means that sure you'd be happy with what you have now, it's real happiness for the moment, but someone steals your car or you lose you job and can't afford your nice house anymore then you wouldn't be happy any longer, ben franklins statement meant that sure you'd be happy while you have them but when they're gone you wouldn't, true happiness is always occurring not due to circumstance

Good luck!
Good point there... That is what is keeping me from just taking off and backpacking around for a while. I am afraid it will turn into a road of self destruction, not self discovery
I guess I am not ready yet, otherwise I would have left right? haha
To the OP, go for it...

I think that is a gr8 idea...but experience is different and totalay subjective! I start traveling when i was 18...travel across Europe,Little bit of Africa and asia,UK...and now i am 26,i am in Portugal, have family,house,car...everything i need...but i didnt stop traveling...My wife, son and me...sit in the car...and World is our oyster! Its gr8 way to get to know yourself...your limits and the secret strength you didnt know that exist...yeah it get bad and gloomy...but that is the core of it...PUSH YOUR LIMITS!!! Just go for it...and stay strong!!!

The social programming in you runs deep. "Stuff" breaks, materials don't last and buying things is an endless cycle of catering to a hollow which will never be filled. It's not wrong to enjoy technology and have nice things but it's pointless centering your whole life around something that doesn't matter; like holding onto money which may one day be worth nothing at all. What matters are the experiences you have, and what you take away from it.
There are alternative ways to live and they are equally as valid and open to happiness as any other traditional idea, like the Nuclear family. You don't need a wife and kids, a nice car, and a heady bank account to experience success or true happiness. It's pre-packaged ideas like these that each of us have learned from television, schools, and other families to fit into society and live a "normal" life. The World Bank wants you to take out loans and go into the illusion of debt buying things that will seemingly make you a happier person to keep the economy and society functioning. It's just another form of indentured servitude.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, there are no "proper" ways to live. Just like there are no ordinary moments.
