My new stash box I just made... 3

Made from purple heart. It's made so that all the grain lines up on the outside, when the lid is on, it looks like a complete solid block of wood, with no changes in grain. The sloppy inlay is of african blackwood. It's the symbol for neptune.
"Neptune rules plants used for the purpose of intoxication, such as Indian hemp, i.e. marijuana, the coca bush, the opium poppy, the peyote cactus, and the psilocybine mushroom.
Rules such bodily functions as the pineal glands and those parts of the nervous system that are sensitive to psychic impulses and related to the aura."
Everything with boundaries that are in one way or another undefined or unclear is ruled by this planet, for instance, gases, dreams, fantasy, vague hunches, etc. It is the symbol for escapism, drug intoxication, and glamour, as well as for high ideals and ideal love.
And the lid has cocobolo inside.
yayy

Cool, I think I need to read more about Neptune!
Thats a beautiful wood! I like how you made the grain line up. That must take some skill. I am going to be undertaking the task of making my own pipe. I need to settle on a wood to use. I live near hardwood forest and I have fallen trees on my property so I want to use a species that I can find in my backyard.
Thanks for sharing!

Damn dude!
Do you have a blog or something that you post your creations on?
I've seen another of your pieces on here, a wood pipe I think. It's awesome work!

Sweet! Do you know what kind of hardwoods are back there? Fruit trees work really well for pipes.

I cut the inlay by hand, with chisels (that i also forged myself), and cut the main box with a bandsaw.
thanks for the awesome comments guys!!

I have your normal stuff like oak and black walnut. There is an apple tree out there. It puts out nice big green apples every summer. I dont think we have any cherry trees near by. There is a huge black walnut tree right in my front yard.It litters the ground every year with huge green fruits containing the nuts.

Ha, it's not that hard, just...google! You can forge small chisels with stock tool steel, a propane torch, water, and knowledge of tempering/hardening.
And apple wood makes really nice pipe wood, tastes very nice. The pipe in my sig was made from apple wood i got in my front yard...

Hmm you know I think like half that tree died and fell to the ground this past summer too. Maybe lightening? But anyway I should be able to find a decent piece to work with. Im gonna rough out the basic shape with my grandfathers band saw then chisel and sand the rest. Whats the general rule about staining a pipe? Any thing special to keep in mind?

There ya go. and thanks!
As for staining, i wouldn't know much, I've never stained wood. I like the natural colouration myself.
The tobacco pipe industry has staining techniques down to a science, you should google tobacco pipe staining and go from there!

That pipe is gorgeous, I see people easily pay a bill for it (although I doubt you're selling). Great box!
I've wanted to make a pipe myself for some time, I even have a bamboo forest to take shoots from, but I don't know where to start.

wow, just got home, and feeling very warm from all these wonderful comments! Thanks everyone, really, this is what keeps me going!
And, when i do sell my pipes, they go for around 100$ usually, but i like to just give them away as gifts the most. After school is done, and i have some time, i'll be making pipes for money...
The next pipe i make, i will photograph the process, and do a tek for you guys.
If you have bamboo, you can do reallly really nice stems by first burning it so it just turns black on the entire outside (being careful not to burn it so much that it cracks or catches on fire), then sand that down till it's dark brown again, then sand with finer grit sandpaper untill you get to like 600grit, then just put any sort of natural oil on it. The grain is almost 3D. It'll be a dark blackish brown, with hints of yellow and straw coloured grain. And since the grain runs straight through the entire piece, it's very strong, unlike long wood stems. Also, it's already hollow for you! perfect.
IMO, best wood for starting to make pipes.
Maybe i'll do a tutorial on how to make a simple but really nice looking bamboo pipe...hmm..
This is what burnt bamboo stems look like...

Amazing work on the bamboo too! I don't know how long you take but if you can create at a good pace you could live off it, the quality is there.

Naw, I've never had a chance to use pipestone yet... I saw a native american pipe at an art gallery today though, and it was made out of pipestone....and it was aweeesomee.. so i'll be looking around for some...
aaand, it's actually african blackwood. Makes for a great pipe wood, very dense, builds a good cake, tastes good, and is resistant to human saliva (which is why they use it in bagpipes).
Also, the colours in those last pipes are really enhanced by very fine sanding, followed by a buffing process. three different cotton buffing wheels at high RPM, with wood sanding compound, then this stuff called white diamond, and then pure carnuaba wax. This is the same process that tobacco pipe makers use to finish their pipes after staining. I just skip the staining part.
I can't believe this thread is still alive, haha. thanks everyone!!

You have unique style and make the kind of things I would love to fill my life with.
you inspire me.
Wood working runs in my family my grandfathers all down my mothers side were carpenters and my mother picked it up (on her own because for some reason my grandad never took the time to teach her) I feel it may be time to try my hand.

No joinery here. You just have to make sure that you're glueing side grain to side grain, since end grain won't hold a good bond.
I haven't really done any joinery work yet, since this was the first box i ever really made i guess..
oh, i made one other one, but it was just a rough one out of scrap for my chisels, so that doesn't count.

What do you recommend for someone who doesn't have access to many exotic hardwoods? I might be able to get something like mahogany but in a really limited supply. I have access to a lot of rubber trees and bamboo, I think the bamboo stem is easy but the bowl has got me stumped.

nice man!
Just be aware, starting off with no tools is really really rough. Do you have tools laying around? power tools?
I started off with just a hand drill, and...a carving knife...and that's pretty much it. It was slow work, but with dedication comes reward i suppose...

No power tools
I have an okay knife, and a pin vice (drill) which is small enough for a minifigurine hobby, I think the smallest bit is < 1/18th inch, biggest can't be more than 2mm.
I do need a hand drill (or dremel) for other purposes, just haven't gotten around to getting one.

Any recommendations for a good set of chisels to work with?

This is easy, Just take a piece of bamboo, and use that as the bowl...
Picture it looking just like this, except made entirely out of bamboo, and without those horrible fake feathers...

Super easy to make, and they smoke really well. I'm going to write up a tek asap.

Not too sure man, I'm sort of just getting into them myself. I would just go for quality over quantity. One or two high end chisels are greater than 20 shitty ones. Nothing from big box stores, look for specialty wood shops.
anythin from Leevalley (not sure if they are outside Canada)
They have a comprehensive website to browse, the chisel sets they stock are all top notch, look for ones of similar quality/price.

Well...I got everything else but the Ace Hardware by me didn't have the right kind of knowledge.
I'm going to try without and post results.
