I've wanted to make a pipe myself for some time, I even have a bamboo forest to take shoots from, but I don't know where to start.

Sweet! Do you know what kind of hardwoods are back there? Fruit trees work really well for pipes.

I cut the inlay by hand, with chisels (that i also forged myself), and cut the main box with a bandsaw.
thanks for the awesome comments guys!!
Why people go to large chain stores and buy plastic smoking accessories when there are dudes out there like you is beyond me. The next stash box/pipe I buy will be from you or a dude like you.

wow, just got home, and feeling very warm from all these wonderful comments! Thanks everyone, really, this is what keeps me going!
And, when i do sell my pipes, they go for around 100$ usually, but i like to just give them away as gifts the most. After school is done, and i have some time, i'll be making pipes for money...
The next pipe i make, i will photograph the process, and do a tek for you guys.
If you have bamboo, you can do reallly really nice stems by first burning it so it just turns black on the entire outside (being careful not to burn it so much that it cracks or catches on fire), then sand that down till it's dark brown again, then sand with finer grit sandpaper untill you get to like 600grit, then just put any sort of natural oil on it. The grain is almost 3D. It'll be a dark blackish brown, with hints of yellow and straw coloured grain. And since the grain runs straight through the entire piece, it's very strong, unlike long wood stems. Also, it's already hollow for you! perfect.
IMO, best wood for starting to make pipes.
Maybe i'll do a tutorial on how to make a simple but really nice looking bamboo pipe...hmm..
This is what burnt bamboo stems look like...

That is a very cool pipe, man, you're gifted.
How much would you ask for a stash box like yours? But perhaps with an on it instead?

Amazing work on the bamboo too! I don't know how long you take but if you can create at a good pace you could live off it, the quality is there.

Hey Meathod, great work as always. I was wondering, what kind of joints did you use on the box? I can't see them very well in the picture.

I'm keeping track of this thread.
I've been coming on the pub for years and every time I see hod's work, I say, "I'm going to get one of those."
One day, I hope to.

Sweet box man!
The pipe in your signature is fucking rad.
How much would it run me to get one like that?

Well I harvested a huge hunk of apple from the tree in my pasture. Turns out the entire tree is dead I think. So I have lots of wood to practice with.

How do you get those vibrant colors without stain? Do you use linseed oil or something?
EDIt: I read your post now.. nevermind.

Naw, I've never had a chance to use pipestone yet... I saw a native american pipe at an art gallery today though, and it was made out of pipestone....and it was aweeesomee.. so i'll be looking around for some...
aaand, it's actually african blackwood. Makes for a great pipe wood, very dense, builds a good cake, tastes good, and is resistant to human saliva (which is why they use it in bagpipes).
Also, the colours in those last pipes are really enhanced by very fine sanding, followed by a buffing process. three different cotton buffing wheels at high RPM, with wood sanding compound, then this stuff called white diamond, and then pure carnuaba wax. This is the same process that tobacco pipe makers use to finish their pipes after staining. I just skip the staining part.
I can't believe this thread is still alive, haha. thanks everyone!!

You have unique style and make the kind of things I would love to fill my life with.
you inspire me.
Wood working runs in my family my grandfathers all down my mothers side were carpenters and my mother picked it up (on her own because for some reason my grandad never took the time to teach her) I feel it may be time to try my hand.

No joinery here. You just have to make sure that you're glueing side grain to side grain, since end grain won't hold a good bond.
I haven't really done any joinery work yet, since this was the first box i ever really made i guess..
oh, i made one other one, but it was just a rough one out of scrap for my chisels, so that doesn't count.

What do you recommend for someone who doesn't have access to many exotic hardwoods? I might be able to get something like mahogany but in a really limited supply. I have access to a lot of rubber trees and bamboo, I think the bamboo stem is easy but the bowl has got me stumped.

nice man!
Just be aware, starting off with no tools is really really rough. Do you have tools laying around? power tools?
I started off with just a hand drill, and...a carving knife...and that's pretty much it. It was slow work, but with dedication comes reward i suppose...
