what is the best way to sterlize without a pressure cooker, and what are the disadvantages?

Microwave. Disadvantages are moisture loss and possible burning or substrate if it get's too dry during the process.

can microwaves get as hot as pressure cookers?

Yes, plus you have high energy microwaves bombarding the substrate, wrecking havoc upon the enzymes and chemical structures (DNA/RNA) of any baddies present.

Sorry, that's completely wrong.
Wet substrate in a microwave cannot get hotter than 100 degrees C. Wet substrate in a pressure cooker can reach 121 degrees C.
Also microwaves themselves have very little effect on primitive organisms like bacteria and moulds.

Wet(water) things in the microwave can get hotter than 100 degrees but not by much. I am pretty sure a nuker can beat the crap out of practically any mold.

and still nobody has answered his question, yur answer is boiling, in a pot of water, with a lid for a hour

microwaves will kill any living organism that you can fit into it within 5 mins, but it's not my prefered method of sterilization

Water in LIQUID form cannot reach more than 100 centagrade at one atmosphere. GASEOUS water CAN and DOES reach temperatures in excess of 100 degrees centagrade, and the specific heat of gaseous water at 100 C is almost 10 times that of liquid water at 100 C, meaning that it transfers heat energy much better when a gas. This is why steam burns are so much more severe than hot water burns. Also, in a PC, water can and does reach temps in excess of 100 C. In a microwave oven, high energy microwaves are emitted that excite every single atom they come in contact with. These atoms can be so energized that a combustion reaction can take place in the presence of oxygen.

All you children who think you can read Moe's Poop tek and scour the shroomery FAQ in place of a college degree need to rethink what you consider knowledge.

Take some college level physics and chemistry, then tell me about how hot water can get in a microwave, or what microwaves are for that matter.

yeah, ok... I only have a degree in biology so I wouldn't know about the microwave tolerance for micro organisms Psychoslut. I'm sorry for over stepping my knowledge, guess I should drop out of grad school and get my bachelors all over again.

Fuck PCing (Unless you already have one).  If you're doing BRF jars then just steam sterilize (much more affordable).  My friend has not come across any contams in three separate grows, all using steam sterilization.  Steam sterilization is under-rated.  Somebody has to stand up for it

EDIT: I'm stoned.  .denots m'I :TIDE

Word. Microwaves are nasty, especially to critters with DNA/RNA. Oh wait a minute, every critter under the sun has those...

Three generations of cambos on microwaved substrate without ONE going bad.

My friend is going to start a grow log using boiled and then microwaved popcorn. We'll see how it goes

sterlization in a pot of water is just fine.. AFOAF did 12 jars with only one contam to cobweb.. But he only sterlized for about 45 mins.. Next time we will go with the 90 mins..

PEACE!

Bullshit. I once microwaved a cockroach for 15 minutes. When I opened the door the little fucker jumped out and ran off.
