Washington Bans Alcoholic Energy Drinks
November 11, 2010 - thenewschronicle.com

A statewide ban on alcoholic energy drinks will be implemented in Washington on November 18. The ban stems from the hospitalization of nine college students after drinking Four Loko

Establishments selling alcoholic energy drinks were given one week to clear them from their shelves after state regulators have imposed a ban on these beverages due to the hospitalization of nine dangerously drunk college students in October.

The ban, also been implemented in Michigan, Utah, and Oklahoma, will be effective on November 18. The ban covers beer-based drinks containing caffeine, similar to the malt-liquor energy drink Four Loko. Boozy energy drinks have also been banned in some universities as the Food and Drug Administration is set to conduct a safety review of these beverages.

According to Democratic Governor Chris Gregoire, who requested for the ban, a strong caffeine-alcohol combination can be potent and could result to drinking by concealing the regular depressant effect of alcohol. These alcohol-based beverages, which are available in fruit flavors and sold in attractive colored cans, can be appealing to the youth, the same effect Joe Camel had on the young.

Alcoholic energy drinks captured the limelight last month when nine students from Central Washington University were hospitalized after drinking Four Loko. Their blood alcohol levels were in the range of 0.12 to 0.35 percent (a blood-alcohol level of 0.30 is considered lethal), said James Gaudino, President of the University.

Toxicological examinations revealed no trace of drugs, except for a small amount of marijuana although some of the students admitted consuming vodka, rum, and beer combined with Four Loko. The hospitalized students had no previous experience drinking.

Phusion Projects Inc., of Chicago, the company that manufactures Four Loko, did not make any comment on the newly-imposed ban, although a spokesman admitted that it would be painful for them not to sell to underage drinkers.

Beer and wine sellers were worried by the time frame set by the Liquor Control Board for the removal of the alcoholic drink from their shelves. They were hoping that the time frame would be extended to a month. According to the Washington Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association, the total cost of the alcoholic beverage already in the shelves could amount to $3 million.

Drinks that will remain in the shelves before November 18 could be returned to the distributors who are not required to buy the goods back. But for the sake of keeping their good standing with retailers, they would have to buy them back.

The state ban is valid for 4 months but it is in the hands of the Liquor Control Board or State Legislature if they want to make the ban permanent.

Banning them isn't the answer.

Slap a warning label on the cans.

Stupid Democrats to the rescue to keep us safe.  Seriously, blaming 4 loko for the ills of alcohol is just a bit short sited.  Alcohol kills a lot of people, this isn't anything new.

hilarious sig^^^ omg

On topic though, energy drinks + alcohol are just a stupid mix. Keep it legal so we can let all the dumb people die out; survival of the fittest at its best. stimulants mixed with depressants are a very bad mix your your heart and CNS.

Does that mean Red Bull and Jagermeister (sp?) mixed are bad for you?  I've had that  few times and it's pretty good.

God fucking damn it.  This is horrible news.  Funny that the ban only lasts for 4 months.

In any case, you'd have to be fucking retarded to not realize how inane and ridiculous this is.  Alcoholic energy drinks are the new enemy of your children.  Because the cans are brightly colored and the drinks are sweet, they appeal to children.

It is common knowledge that once you hit 21, adults metamorphose into vile creatures that detest all things sweet and crave alcoholic drinks of flavor akin to pure diarrhea.

Where's the ban for vodka, rum, and beer?

Is anyone else befuddled by how little sense this sentence makes?  I mean, even just linguistically speaking it is nearly unintelligible.
