It is starting to spill over...
Drug war prompts text message alert system at UT-Brownsville 11/10/2010 - My San Antonio .com
BROWNSVILLE — The University of Texas-Brownsville/Texas Southmost College is planning an emergency text messaging system as part of its strategy to alert students and faculty to dangers amid the drug war raging across the Rio Grande, officials said Wednesday.
The UTB campus backs up against the river and has already had scares from stray bullets coming from Matamoros, Mexico. One recent intelligence alert had campus police knocking on dorm doors in the middle of the night to warn students to stay indoors.
Students and faculty were encouraged to enter cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses into an internal campus database that will allow for instant security updates by campus police.
The university earlier this year installed interior and exterior speakers as part of its emergency notification system.

This is nothing short of fucking ridiculous to install any type of "early warning system". How about fixing the fucking drug war instead, so that there would be no need for such a system? Absurd that this is even considered an option or deemed an acceptable alternative to solving the obvious problem here.

matamoros is a war zone man. Gulf cartel and zetas fight it out there hard. I think its a good idea, you really cant predict what these militant cartels are going to do next, they are already going through with terrorist acts in mexico.

I agree completely for the safety of everyone near that area. I just have a major problem with how they are handling it all. There would be no need for any type of early warning system if drugs weren't illegal. This helps remedy the problem of stray bullets hitting students and whatnot, but it doesn't fix the bigger picture at all.
It would be akin to us removing some toxic chemicals downstream in a river when we could just walk upstream and stop the guys who kept on dumping them. I hope that analogy made sense. It's very fitting for the way we currently handle the drug war. More than anything, I just want to see all of this senseless violence stop because it's beginning to hit closer and closer to home now.

How is a University going to end the drug war? It seems to me like they're doing the best they can within their power, I'm glad they're at least doing something to protect their students.

Sorry, I wasn't referring to the university. I was referring to our own government and how they are handling the situation. I already said I agreed with what the university was doing to help protect the students.

I thought it was going to be a alert system for students and faculty that dope dogs were coming - bummer.
Just more crap about stinxico and our stupid (but lucrative) drug policies.
