Weird clusters on cakes....Eh?
    #1346613 - 03/02/03 12:11 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Hopefully somebody will be able to tell me if this is good or bad...because I've never seen it before! They showed up yesterday on 2 cakes, and 3 more today.

Hopefully the sorry picture quality will let you even tell what you're looking at -- click for larger versions.

Those look like deformities. They're perfectly safe (have the same alkaloid content as a regular cube). Sometimes very high humidity is the cause for such deformities.

Are they going to just keep growing like a normal pin would? Like...can they still be harvested/consumed?

My friend has noticed that they stop growing at some point, and will eventually rot, so it's good to harvest them when they're looking "ripe" I guess. It's best to get them off the cake in order to save room for normal pin formation.

They're gonna be a little harder to harvest, don't worry about damaging the cakes though. Also, they are safe to consume and act as a normal mushroom would. They are basically just physical deformities. They are made up of the exact same stuff that any "normal" mushroom is made up of.

"Ripe", as in about the size of that big one there?
