Precious Metals noob
    #13418498 - 11/01/10 02:50 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Been poking my nose into this lately...been sniffing around, poking a few websites. Checking it out.

As a kid I scoped out the idea of investing in gold (just watching how the price always increased but when I noticed it was $600/oz so I had no idea how anyone could even 'get in'). So, now I'm starting to see the Gold Craze go nuts again and again I see that the cost is ungodly high. Wish I had money to stuff into it back then eh? Anyway...for those of us who don't have massive wads of cash laying around to stuff into gold, I'm considering Silver and other accessible metals.

Of course though, I know little about the financial stage on a world level including precious metals. I do some scrap/recycling so I understanding fluctuating prices and etc but I'd like places to learn and read into it more. Right now I have $$ getting allotted into RRSP's via my company (only because they match my %). But I know damn well RRSP's are a rip off in the end compared to endless other options to get more value, especially long term. That and if SHTF piece of paper saying I have $$$$$ in XXXX location is meaningless. I'd far over like to take that money and invest it into a precious metal instead. Nothing lost from my current income at the very least.

So anyone have any tips, places to read up on, warnings, experiences learned the hard way, etc. It'd be much appreciated. Hard to find a place that isn't biased or trying to steal your money to learn about this stuff via search engines.

but honestly people go back and forth on here all day about the worth of gold, surprised no one has replied yet

I used to be a gold broker for a company for a year with my dad. He quit to start his own brokerage and has been very successful since 2002.

To be honest you should have gotten into gold back in 2002 when it was under $250/ounce

However if you would like to get in touch with him and are seriously thinking about getting into gold, silver or any other precious metal, Send me a PM and I'll give you his website and information. He deals with both small and large buyers/sellers ($10-$10,000,000 deals). You get the gold shipped directly to you certified, insured, and unmarked. He also guarantees buy back.

It's been a few years for me being in the field as i'm a computer tech, but like I said, if you want, I can put you in touch with a very reputable broker :-)

Cheers!

I bought gold and silver in 2008 because Wiccan Seeker told me to and silver has doubled in price, gold has risen as well.

Gold has been at an all time high last few years, silver has been doing good as well, I know my lol Bro dropped 600 into silver back when it was $5/ounce now he's got a few grand worth of silver he is about to sell

I notice that...the Half-Kennedy's clad coins work out to be less per oz of silver then any of the junk silvers or the pure silvers.

I wonder if there is some sort of pitfall within there or if clads are a good buy along with the 80% & 90% variations between US & CDN silver coins pre-67.

If you can afford it, go numismatic pre 1933. That gold is not taxable and not reported to the government. Do some reading on the private gold market :-) (ms65 and higher)

Ouch thats actualy bad advice. Numismatic coins are very hard to unload in times of economic peril, plus you pay twice or so the melt value.

Taxing gold would hurt the banks more than the few private investors, and the US Government would rather let millions of Americans default than do anything to hurt the banks.

Own Interest > Lobby Interests > Indirect Lobby interests > The rich > the people.

Yeah, but the government knows about every coin purchased post 1933. if/when 1933 repeats it'self, your gold wont matter because the government knows you have it and will come back to try to take it. Just saying, if you're a truly private person, and wish to launder money LEGALLY, Private gold is where it's at. and fyi, you cant still get private gold for just a few more $ per ounce.
At least thats my take on it :-)

Unless things changed recently, as far as I know its still possible to enter a coin shop, buy some krugerrands, gold maples or gold eagles, pay in cash and walk out the door.

Money laundering is something we dont do in this forum!

You pay in cash, but the shop HAS to report it, it's the law :-) feel free to read up on that (obviously numismatic coins are exempt).

Second of all, it's not technically laundering if it's not against the law eh? and even if you want to call in money laundering, who cares because that is what's called a "Legal Loop Hole". If you need to hide money from an ex-wife trying to take everything from you, or hide money from IRS so they can't take every penny you have, there is something you can do besides Stuffing cash into a mattress or sending money to an overseas bank account and not being able to get it back. But that's fine, you are right.

I used my words of choice to get my point across, but I guess there are some people on this forum who love to be right no matter what they feel like saying.

Good luck with your advice, I have no use for this part of the forum

nowhere but up.

Keep your eyes on the Fed.  When (if) they ever decide to do what's right and allow deflation and free market economics sell your metals.

When the dollar becomes "good as gold" in that respect we can expect a bear market in PMs

Unfortunately though, even IF the fed allows deflation,  all of the accrued interest beyond the principle will swallow everyone alive.

I'm thinking the Fed is going to run the currency into the ground before they allow the exponentially growing black hole of interest-beyond-principle on bonds to swallow up ALL of the currency and beyond.

I just bought 12 ounces of silver at 26 an ounce. I think it's going to dip a bit and then go up. I wish I could afford more silver or gold but I just crashed a car and I won't have any chance to buy more soon.

Just completed a purchase (probably my last) of one thousand ounces. I agree that silver probably will dip in the next few months but I don't buy for the short term. I gave up trying to pick peaks and troughs long ago.
