Text message results in student charged with selling marijuana at school November 10, 2010 - naplesnews.com
A student’s text message resulted in police arresting a Fort Myers High student and charging him selling marijuana on campus.
The Fort Myers Police Department received an anonymous text on Tuesday regarding a student selling marijuana from his car and backpack at Fort Myers High School.
After authorities notified the principal, Tyler Lecky, 17, was pulled from class. A search of Lecky’s backpack and car produced two plastic bags of marijuana. The first contained 15.7 grams of marijuana. The second contained 7.9 grams of marijuana.
Lecky was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana over 20 grams and for sale of marijuana within 1000 feet of a school.
Last month, police gave students at the school “tip” cards reminding them how to anonymously text crime tips to police and keep their school safe.
“This is exactly what we are looking for, said Chief Doug Baker. “It’s their personal safety channel to alert police to a possible danger. We don’t know who sent us this tip but their actions should be commended.”
The goal of giving the students the cards was to increase awareness and prevention of violence in all forms whether it is drugs, fights, weapons, harassment, bullying or other safety concerns.
Texting allows people to notify police when calling may not be feasible or safe. It also helps combat the anti-snitch era. Texting a tip is easy. All you have to do is text message C-R-I-M-E-S (274637) and use the key word FMPD in the body of the text. The technology makes giving police the 411 2EZ.

Fuck that. When I was in school you didnt do shit like this. If a kid told on someone for drugs the group would find out who told and beat the shit out of them. People hiding behind technology.

We should flood that number with false tips to keep the cops occupied. Its not like they they spend a lot of time actually hunting down the violent offenders that got away from the scene anyway. They're always just sitting around waiting for the kid to light up in his car.

I know I'll probably get some hate for saying this, but in this specific case I actually think it is a good idea.
If it had happened at a college or workplace where everyone is over age then I would agree with the comments above, you should just mind your own business and not snitch.
But these kids were under age. Yes I know 17 is close but I'm sorry, dealing to underage children just damages the cause for the rest of us, it gives cannabis bad press and it should not be tolerated. I imagine most of you started smoking under age (I'm probably a strange exception, I stayed well away from it until I was twenty ) but think about it, if you had kids, would you encourage them to smoke at high school age? I'm sure that at least at the lower age range you wouldn't (17-18 well maybe ok, but 14 or 15 is a bit too young)
I'm sure this guy didn't care if he was selling to a 14 year old or a 17 year old and it can make a lot of difference. Of all the people I know who smoke it is only the ones who started younger that have had problems with it. The same as I don't agree with young people drinking big amounts regularly I don't think that they should be smoking pot too young either.
Leave the "adult" pleasures for when your mind and body can take it.

Instead of jumping to conclusions maybe you should think there might be a reason.
Apart from shunning any kind of smoke to the lungs for many years due to the death of a close family member of lung cancer, one of my best friends nearly died when we were 15 from what the doctors diagnosed as an allergy to THC. He had been smoking for over a year with no problems and doing his second grow (his parents preferred that he grow at home than buy off dealers. Cool hippy parents and living in a country that is quite permissive about cannabis). When he picked his second batch of plants he started feeling bad and the following weeks he was in a terrible state. In the end he had to be rushed to the hospital and they found that his body reacted badly to THC) Even now, just smoking in the same room as him makes him feint.
So I think it is understandable that both these things made me very wary about trying it.
It wasn't until many years later (and after taking cubes a few times) I decided that I wanted to try it. I have never been against it, I just made the personal choice not to try it until then. Now it's a different story, but I still have seen more than a few people, including my brother, suffer the consequences of starting to smoke too young, and I will never ever be in favour of that. I'm not saying it happens to everyone, but I don't think it is worth taking the chance.
PS: and the reason about me saying that most people started smoking under age is that in my experience, that is the age most of my friends started.

Nibin, my friend was told that too. In reality though it turned out that the anti-depressants he had been previously prescribed had fucked his brain chemistry beyond repair. Don't just assume.

No hate here. I agree children should be discouraged from using and selling cannabis to children.
What bothers me more is that children are being encouraged to snitch on their classmates. For all we know it could have been another pot dealer who snitched.
Of the two behaviors, cannabis or snitching, I would say snitching would have the most negative impact on a growing child's brain and have more negative consequences on them as an adult.

Nah, this guy wasn't on anything at the time and he even gets rashes from touching plants or parts of plants. He doesn't even have to inhale the smoke. I'm not saying that smoking cannabis will make you develop an allergy though, he would have probably got it even if he hadn't smoked at the time, but it was scary as hell, I'll tell you that.
Of the five or six that smoked in the group at that time most of them quit for a bit, it freaked them out so much.
@veggie, I'll agree that snitching is certainly not an activity that should be encouraged, at least not in "offenses" that harm nobody but the person doing it. I might not like the way it happened and I certainly do think that this method of reporting the "crime" is absolutely disgusting. To the contrary, in cases where it is minors dealing to minors if the person reporting it has a legitimate reason (i.e. he isn't another dealer fucking with the competition) he should do it out in the open and be applauded for it. Rejecting under age consumption is a must if us cannabis users want to be taken seriously. I feel absolutely no sympathy for that 17 year old.

what bothers me most about this article are the size of the bags confiscated. 15.7 grams and 7.9 grams. Personal stashes?Otherwise this kid is overpacking his half onions and quarter bags.
But seriously, I used to buy bags in highschool during class. Times have changed a bit.

^ I agree with the both of you. Also, encouraging students to snitch on their friends is very reminiscent of East Berlin, and will have the greater effect of teaching students to not trust their own friends. Children who grow up with an inability to trust people will ultimately be delinquents.
