letting fully colonized jars sit longer than really needed
    #13462147 - 11/10/10 02:37 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hey fellow growers!!!

I have a question. Is it good or bad to let jars that have jars that have fully colonized sit a in the incubator a little longer?

Just started my first grow 5 days ago and from what I gather I´m doing quite well so far. I have some jars knocked up with tasmanian strain sitting at 25 C/77 F and their colonizing fast(sorry, can´t show pics, couldn´t get a decent shot with all the light reflecting from the jars), I might not be able to give them birth at once when they´re fully colonized but may have to wait some days. What effect will it have on my cakes??

:peace:

mate I've got a couple of jars that have been full colonised for at least two weeks that are just sitting in a draw waiting to be used, I think as long as they don't dry out it's fine and even then I think you could probably hydrate them with a dunk b4 use.

I'm not an ex spurt though

For how long? 10-15 days is ok and can even be beneficial. If you have to wait more than 20 days, I suggest you to put them in the fridge once they are fully colonized.

You're supposed to wait at least a week after full colonization before birthing anyway.  Waiting longer, up to a month will give a better flush because it allows the mycelium time to digest more of the substrate before entering fruiting conditions.

I was having issues with that too and I found this works for me.

Try putting the jar someone where you don't visibly see any glare, then set your camera to macro and spot focus (if possible), then turn the flash on, and stand far enough away that at 3x zoom the jar takes up most of the screen on your camera. Also if you can change the ISO try 400 or 800, then pre-focus and shoot.

Hope it works for you too.

That makes sense. I´m learning something new about growing mushrooms each day thanks to this place!

Lets see how does this experiment works out in the end.

Hey thanks for the tip! I´ll give it a try tomorrow and see if I can come up with some pics..

Would I do the same for fully-colonzied horse poo from rye grain? I'm guessing so, because you do so for BRF jars.

BTW if they're fully colonized, pull them out of the incubator. They don't need the heat but maybe some bacteria does.
