Cleaning cakes after first flush?

After my first flush, when i clean the cakes for the second flush do i just pull them out or cut them?
Because pulling them out leaves a hole and i didn't know if they will contaminate?
I've never got to this point before so i just wanna do it right. lol.

Gently twist them at the base, it might tear some of the mycelium, but as long as you dunk and roll in-between flushed you should be ok

Dunk and roll for your first flush, then after wards just dunk and place back into your fruiting chamber. You do not want to re-roll your cakes in more verm after the first dunk and roll.

I've heard both, dunking is a must between flushes, but some people do roll as well, maybe due to losing verm from harvesting?

I have found cakes tend to contaminate faster if you re-roll with verm between flush's. Iv heard RR say before that rerolling with verm can allow contams to germinate in between the original and new layer of moistened verm as well.

That makes a pot of sense, do you think in the instance that you need to roll again, using verm that has been sterilized in the oven for an hour would be safe and cut down on the chance of contamination?

It's not the new verm you're worried about, it's all the contaminant spores that have more than likely landed on your cake and any verm you rolled it in by that point. Contam spores are typically unable to germinate on your fully colonized, freshly birthed cakes but by tossing another layer of verm on top of said contam ridden verm and then proceeding to mist it daily you'd provide a nice safe haven for those contams to then germinate.

The contams that will grow will be on the surface of the cake so I dont believe sterilizing the verm before re-rolling would do any good.
Keep it simple and be gentle while picking and you should be fine.

The reason that's cited for not rolling for 2nd, 3rd etc flushes is that in the unsterile environment of your FC, contaminant spores will have landed on your cake. Re-rolling in verm can give those spores a nice environment to germinate in, so the sterility of the verm isn't really the issue.
Yes, gently twist the mushrooms and they should just come off.
Afterwards you'll rinse the cake under running water before and after dunking. I lightly rub them under the water to wash off any yuckies, aborts I didn't pick, old verm, etc.
