Distillation Apparatus
    #1345838 - 03/01/03 10:49 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

If this isn't the right forum, please move it - but i thought it would be appropriate here.

A friend is wondering if anybody knew any good methods to construct a home made distillation apparatus - one that can be used with organic solvents like Naptha or Xylene, so that he doesn't have to go through the sketchyness of buying real glassware? What are some reasonable ways of doing this?

Thanks!

Some kind of glass jar with a thermometer in it and tubing coming out leading to a pot that is sub merged in ice water up to the neck as a condenser.

what kind of tubing? I'm worried that the solvents might dissolve the tubing, which would of course defeat the purpose of the whole process.

i wouldnt touch a solvent like xylene or even methanol with a homemade distillation aparatus

but if you are that determined ,

you should defentally find a stir plate with heat (no flame issue) and a real deal roundbottom for distillation

for a condenser sumthing as simple as a metal pipe with caps, holes in the end caps to allow a tube , then holes in the pipe(jacket) to run water to condense the solvent

maybee a aspirator for the vaccuum sorce if needs be

You can make a condenser out of copper tubing from the hardware store. Fill the tube with sand before you shape it to keep it from crimping shut. Be careful what you put through it... ok for alcohol, but some things react with copper. Also, don't use any lead based solder anywhere. You can poke the ends through a styrofoam cooler and seal the holes up with silcone. Fill the cooler with cold water and ice.

It would be much better to buy glassware. Check out online auctions or a science supply store in your area. If you are worried, park a few streets away and walk to the store... pay cash, etc. The labx auction site has a lot of good glassware.

here's some real simple plans for distilling a simple alcohol.  it can work for you..test the tubing to make sure.  use heat resistant plastic containers and this will work.   i had fun making it.  friends and i made one once.  we used a gallon size gatorade jug for the condenser.

the condensor in that sketch should be turned 90degrees clockwise. otherwise you have a pressure vessel when liquid condenses and gets caught in the coils forming a series of airlocks

yeah..it's a pretty rough mspaint sketch. i tried using the rotate function, but it kept smearing the condenser all around the page.

Check this out.

I used a similar setup to distill ethanol from drinking alcohol. I used a quart mason jar, a wine glass with the base broken off instead of saran wrap, and instead of suspending a smaller jar in the larger jar, I used a drinking glass with a thick glass bottom to insulate its contents from the heat.

So you have a glass inside a jar with a wine glass resting in the mouth of the jar and its stem hanging directly over the glass. You put your liquid that you want to distill in the bottom of the jar, put ice in the wine glass, and put the aparatus in a hot water bath with a thermometer.

You might end up with some distilled water in your end product which you might be able to freeze out, or you could remove it with anhydrous epsom salts (bake them in the oven till anhydrous).

This is quick, cheap and easy to set up. You just have to keep an eye on it; sipon off the melted ice and add new ice.

I hope this can work well for you.

found this nice little site with a bunch of great, cheap distillation eqiupment. they have this little apparatus for like 30$ along with a bunch of other great junk. check it out http://www.crucible.org/Laboratory.htm#DISTILLATION

check out rhodium.ws  I thinkg there is a tek there for a ghetto prep for distilation.

or if u want you could check out e**y, and look for some glassware.
depending on what u'd need. if you are going to xtract psilocin i recommend that u get a 2x 500ml round bottom flasks, a condenser, a 3 way adapter, distillation/vacuum adapter and thats it.

total should be less than ~120 .

if you don't wanna go this way, teflon tubing will work, since teflon is non reactive.
you could also try HDPE tubing.

good luck with your distillations...btw, if you're going to xtract the psilocin, i recommend a vacuum pump to distill the solvent.

wont work unless youre talking liquid nitrogen
"or you could remove it with anhydrous epsom salts (bake them in the oven till anhydrous)."
wont work. zeolites might help a bit. corn flour too

I'm pretty sure I've heard of both of these methods being used. Could you explain more? Thank you. I don't want to be spreading false info and I'm always trying to learn.

i thought the epsom salts do work, the only draw back is you have to use large volumes or redry a smaller amount many times.

the water an napha or xylene will not mix so there is no need for the "freeze out" one is polar solvent the other is non-polar solvent, so throwing it in the freezer will work . Also go with some proper glassware ebay is your friend. www.labx.com works well too. later on you'll appreciate your glassware.
