Ideal Sawdust consistancy for sumplimented sawdust bags.
    #13458293 - 11/09/10 10:48 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Well, I finally sourced a good supply of sawdust from a local cabinet maker.

He does his woodwork in jobs. These jobs were Cherry/Alder. I plan on going back to get a few more tubs as soon as he does an Oak job. Then mix dusts.

He had three consistencies flour, fine, and coarse. I opted for fine/coarse mix, leaning towards the coarse.

I didn't think I wanted the sawdust flour... I assumed that would compact and not allow good mycelial travel.

What is your preferred consistency? Have any used the flour?

I have trouble picturing the difference between fine and flour.  I would assume flour would probably pack down too much.  What consistency is the picture?  Is that a mix of fine and coarse?  If so I would say you probably want mostly fine but a mix with some coarse will probably work well.

I get some dust from a wood shop and it's mostly pretty dusty with some bigger chunks mixed in.  Works well.

Yeah this is a mix of Coarse and Fine. The Flour was at least as fine as wheat flour. The picture doesn't show the coarse too well, Its actually very thin curls and coils, not chunky or blocky at all.

Going to make some up tonight. Bags of the fine/coarse and skip wood chips.

Dont know about the consistency sorry, i just had a question: I know the type of tree makes a difference when growing straight out of a log, is the same thing true for synthetic logs?

Thats a good question. I have that same one. In the SHiitake section, Mushroom Growers Handbook, all tree species are listed as good--> poor, but the list was clearly created prior to the widespread use of sawdust blocks.

As far as I have been able to find out, no new comprehensive trials have been run, strictly on sawdust blocks.

I suspect (and have heard indications), many of those "poor" woods were ranked as poor strongly upon the fact that the wood is hard and difficult for the mycelium to digest... Whereas sawdust blocks would be considerably mechanically broken down, and should be far easier for mycelium to digest.

No doubt many variables inherent to wood (good or bad for mycelium) that I am unaware of.

Does the coarse sawdust have the consistency/shape of wood shavings? If so - not ideal.

Shavings aren't desirable because they don't pack down enough and the mycelium has to spend too much energy breaching the gap between each piece of wood.

I'm sure it'd still work, you just won't get the most efficient growth.

Kiln dried sawdust/shavings also isn't the best, but If its all you have... then its all you have.

I can't answer with any authority but all my blocks are a mix of mostly mahogany and they work fine and mahogany is one of the harder woods i've seen warned against.

I like medium/course sawdust, but not as large as shavings.  What an industrial circular saw, such as those used in lumber mills for rough cutting logs is great, as is the sawdust from a chain saw.

Lately, I've been experimenting with Douglas fir sawdust since I can get it free by the ton.  I'm finding it works, although not with as high a B.E. as Alder.  I've started adding more rice bran supplement, as well as a bit of table sugar to the Douglas fir sawdust to see how that works.  I'll know in a few months when I fruit the latest blocks.

It is, much of it is wood shavings. I can see where the open space in the coils may be bad. Hopefully the fine mixed in will help "Bridge the Gap"

Kiln dried? This rule out any sawdust made from boards in carpenter/cabinet shops.

Roughcut boards just into the sawmill, prior to kiln dried. Gonna be impossible for me. Several lumber mills around... though strictly Pine. Only harvested Hardwoods in this neck of the woods is purely for firewood.

But I can always keep my eye out for it.

Find a few commercial firewood cutters and get them to save their sawdust, since it's a waste product for them anyway.

Believe it or not, kiln dried pine will also work.  Use a bit more supplement.
