Polyfil lid question
    #13455574 - 11/08/10 07:30 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Ok so i'm making some lids and each lid has 2 holes, one of which i put a self healing injection port by placing silicone over the hole. I'm putting polyfil through the other hole and i'm unsure how tight to make it. I have seen this same question in alot of threads but no real substantial answer. Is there a way to tell if its too tight. I even seen someone say it cant be too tight. Or say it was too tight could i not lightly tug on it to loosen it? I also have tyvek to work with and  coffee filters if someone has a better suggestion i've just been unable to come up with a scenario in my head to use the tyvek and there not be an entry point since i'll be injecting through the port if i put tyvek under or over it the tyvek gets pierced. I dont know. I'm sorry to anyone who thinks i ask too many questions but i'm truly interested in this and i do spend my time searching the forums for answers but i seem to get more out of the discussions, especially since alot of the search results you get are older and though still viable there are newer innovations out there. But anyways thanks for any input.

Fold it over a few times, then reach through the lid with pliers, grab the puff and pull.
It'll snug right into the hole. No danger of it falling out, but you can remove it easily.

How much? A pinch or so.

I roll a pubic sized tuft of the polyfill in the tip of my finger for a min until it stands erect... then I jab it through the little hole ->reach around;----- and pull it through ---  from the other side ->.
Not too rough you don't want to bend her out of shape....

It does not have to be too tight.

:jailbait:

But not too loose either ....

:sisterwendy:

you want it to be just right!

Why'd you bother with a self-healing port if you're using polyfil? You can inject spores through it.

I've been sitting here messing with it and i realized when i do like you said and take a litte pinch of thin wispy polyfil and wad it up when i pull it through i can kind of squeeze the polyfil to one side of the hole and see about a half circle opening but when i let go its pretty well covvered. I also tried it to when i did it i could see like a quarter of the circle. I guess i'm gonna try both and see what happens then i'll have a reference for my polyfil.

Well hell your right.:stoned: You know what. I started out doing this to make jars for use with tyvek but i found that it would probably be hard to silicone down a tyvek square over the hole with my gun since i dont have just a little tube. But is that what most ppl do is just stuff polyfil through and inoculate through it too. I mean why are there so many lid teks if its as easy as that?  I found most of the materials for most teks at ease but after reading through all the lid threads i see so much tyvek use. Why?

Use the silicon. you can wipe it w/ an alcohol soaked cotton ball right before you inoculate it w/ your flame sterilized needle:syringe: and it self seals.

Either way make sure you squirt a little drop of spore solution out before you go into the polyfil or you will melt it with the needle and can leave an opening behind for contams to enter through....

I do it both ways, with a port and just through the puff.
Not quite sure which I like better, but about 51% in favor of injection ports.
No need to wipe the port, it's sterile after you remove the foil from the jar.

Why all the fuss over tyvek? People think it's advanced.

Do you wipe the needle after you flame it?
Why would you wipe a sterile port after removing the foil cover?

When i did my pf jars i alco wiped it flamed then squirted a short shot out to cool. I didnt look for a red needle, and i'm still unsure how much of the needle should be red as i dont want to melt a syringw (I'm really just trying to empty one so if an lc works out i can test it or if a cake turns out i can take a print). Thats why i've really been going at it, trying as many different things as i can. Something's gotta work.
