It definitely does begin to taste like burnt popcorn when you overdo the heat. Or, when the bud is just flat out spent, it will begin to taste like burnt popcorn.
One thing you can do Doc, which I find easiest is instead of grinding your herb up super, super fine (some go as far as to use a coffee grinder), just stick with a regular consistency. Then I vape a little bit, until the bud is bone dry and then it will crumble easily into powder between your fingertips.
Just dump your semi vaped weed into an index card or something, crumble it with your fingers, then load it back up.

Yep. Reminded me of scorched cannabutter.
Breath control I have, and I'm good with electricity... this might work out, even though it's a POS. And I'm completely convinced you guys are right about that. You get what you pay for though, and this was practically free.

Just treat the "number" like an analog knob, all it does is increase/decrease the temp of the element... but the number itself does not represent the temperature.
You could set it to 300 and hit it super slow and get 500 or hit it insanely fast and get 100... a "digital whip vaporizer" is purely a marketing gimmick and provides more ways for it to break with no performance gain.
QFT
Use the digital readout as a guide to where to set it, it's not the actual temp. I set mine to ~330 and cash it at ~350 and it does fine. You just have to play around with it. I also only add enough weed to just cover the screen for maximum air flow over the weed.

I started with a POS vaporizer like that too, actually pretty much the exact same one you seem to be describing.
I found the sweet spot after a while, but overall the experience still sucked compared to the nicer vaporizers I've had the pleasure to use or own these days.
Arizer Extreme, Purple Days, Magic Flight Box, Silver Surfer, you definitely get what you pay for in the vape world. Purple Days is still my favorite.

I bought a cheap Chinese knock off for $35, and it works, but it takes a bit of patience. Set the temp and watch the light when it goes out take your hit and wait for it to reheat again.
Sux when you're trying to show friends but works GREAT for one person.
I will upgrade to a better one eventually, but my wife will have to find a job first. I'm doing good to keep weed and internet on atm

I can't imagine paying what the good ones cost, I've never paid more than about fifteen bucks for paraphernalia. Though I guess a lifetime of rolling papers adds up. (This vaporiser was a trade, if that wasn't evident before.)
Are the more expensive ones faster? It's kind of weird to load a bowl and then sit around and wait for it to be ready.

IF you wanted to go for something portable and good, then I would go with a vapor genie. One of the glass ones. (the metal ones are crap...)
It has a learning curve, just like all vapes, but since It uses a lighter for the heat, you can adjust the heat on the fly. Want a big hit? adjust the flame. want a smaller hit? adjust the flame.
You can get monster hits from one of those. Very nice and portable too.
Only downside is that it costs like 100 bucks....

The lights don't go out to indicate it's at temp.
But it's working pretty good, I'm glad I asked for help.

Personally I think it's worth it, but I have my limits too. I wouldn't go blow $400+ on a volcano or something. For less than $200 there's Purple days (Which no longer have a LOOOOOOOONG ass wait period) or a Da Buddha. Higher quality versions of those box vapes are also available for around 150, but I have no experience with em.
My purple days cost me $180 and it has definitely paid itself off in the year I've had it, in terms of efficiency. Most any other vape would too eventually, by using less plant matter. Of course you can't get this great efficiency from a cheaper model, but you can at least see how it is to vape and the differences in the highs.
My PD is always ready to go 24/7 - 365. It's designed to just be on, otherwise it takes 30 minutes to warm up.
My friends Arizer Extrememe gets up to usable temp in about 2 or 3 minutes, it did work its best after the whole unit heated up though, same with the Da Buddha.
The more expensive models definitely do warm up faster, and they hold a constant temperature much, much better.
Using my PD right now too Chubba
Got it based on your advice if I recall correctly haha.

Probably this thing, called a vrip tech somethinganother.

Upon further inspection, that's a pretty tarry looking bowl piece for a vape.

After I had smoked about an ounce of weed through mine. I started getting a shit load of 'vape resin/hash' from the tube and bowl. I clean the bowl almost daily and the tube every other day or so and I generally have a little 'vape hash' till next cleaning
I have about a half pint of vaped weed now that Im gonna make some BHO with.
I tried making canna-butter with the vaped weed but was not impressed with it at all.
I literally waste nothing with the vape.
