DEA Cracks Down on Sizzurp: Hip Hop's Potent Prescription November 5, 2010 - Baltimore Sun
LOS ANGELES -- The DEA is cracking down on a highly addictive and potentially deadly drink known as "Sizzurp."
Sizzurp is a syrupy drink that's a mixture of prescription cough syrup ( promethazine with codeine), soda and jolly ranchers, for added sweetness.
The concoction produces an intoxicating high but drinking too much of the stuff can be deadly.
Pharmacist Julie Chen says, "codeine is in the same class of drug as morphine, people like to take it for getting a body high or a sense of euphoria," but she warns, "codeine can kill."
Sizzurp, also known as "purple drank," first originated in the south in the 1990's. Its popularity quickly rose as rappers wrote lyrics about the liquid.
The deadly dangers of drinking too much were demonstrated with the deaths of DJ Screw in 2000 and Rapper Pimp C in 2008. In both cases, the coroner ruled their deaths as accidental overdoses of codeine and promethazine -- the main ingredients in Sizzurp.
The dangers of potentially overdosing have not stopped a Compton rapper known as Double-P from choosing Sizzurp as not just a drink of choice, but a lifestyle.
During an interview with KTLA, he shared, "some people smoke a cigarette in the morning, they say their first cigarette makes them feel a certain way. Me, the first cup of Sizzurp helps me start my day off right."
While rhyming about Sizzurp on his new album, Double-P claims his cough syrup prescription is completely legal. However, illegal trafficking of the medicine is a serious problem.
Less than a month ago in Downey, Doctor Nazar Al Bussam was arrested by the DEA on charges of allegedly writing bogus prescriptions of various painkillers, including the coveted cough syrup.
The DEA estimates Al Bussam received more than $100,000 a month in cash for fake prescriptions of numerous drugs. Al Bussam is currently set to face a judge on November 12 for a preliminary hearing.
Meanwhile, today's rappers and hip-hop artists continue to glorify Sizzurp in their lyrics and that has the DEA concerned. "Anytime a substance that can be so dangerous is popularized through music or our culture, it becomes something that we need to be very worried about," says DEA Sarah Pullen.

They're always a bit behind the times. I remember the headlines around here when Pimp C died back in '08. I don't follow the rap culture here but it was a pretty big deal for a lot of people when he passed away.

If all drugs were legal, we could go to the gas station to a kiosk, swipe our driver's license and finger print scan for identity confirmation, and buy any drug we wanted out of it. We get pure chemicals with nothing else dangerous in high, unneeded amounts, the government gets their tax money, and we all win. Why can't they see that?

On a side note... has anyone ever noticed that white pimps are ostensibly cooler than black pimps? Bob Guccione, for example.

That is extremely misleading. They are both opiates, but how rarely do people OD and die from codeine vs morphine. Codeine is shit, only stupid hood rats abuse shit like that.

dont be a douche-- if you drive a car and share the road with other drivers and you have half a brain left you'd think twice before wishing such a thing on the motoring public.
last thing I want is some dipshit who skipped his insurance payment to get a fix running his fucking car into my living room window or t-boning me and my girl on a date out on the town someplace.
think REALLY HARD before you wish for something, b/c you just might get it

Except I, and many people like me, would never accept biometrics in order to do basic purchasing. The only time I've ever had something like that done was at a Wawa where I was carded for smokes and they actually SCANNED my driver's license. I was like "wtf yo?" and they were all "yah, we can do that now, new Federal IDS"
I don't regularly buy cigarettes so this isn't a problem for me.

If you had half a brain you would see that people already drive high and drunk all the time. Prohibition doesn't change that. I'd also rather drive next to people high on opiates and amphetamines than people drunk. You are talking out of your ass.

Syrup is expensive so I doubt hoodrats abuse it as much as you think...only high profile rappers can afford a constant supply...this is pretty much a drug dealers drug if that makes sense to you.

Heroin and cocaine are expensive too, seems like people still abuse those too. I said hoodrats, not crackheads. Obviously most drug addicts in the hood would opt for heroin or crack over codeine. Either way its a shitty drug though that only dumb asses abuse. Hasn't anyone ever told any of these asshats about oxycodone or hydrocodone?

Codeine is like a functional high though man thats the big difference between it and comparing it to something like oxy which can put you down and out its a much more concentrated form. I think people that sip syrup want a little taste of the opiate high but don't want the full on effects that heroin brings and its negatives.
