sudden cactus blackening and death - help!
    #1345212 - 03/01/03 04:41 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

hi folks! i think i need some help here please!
my parodia militaris (notocactus ottonis) cacti have been showing this problem lately. they start to turn black, rot and die out of nothing.
this is very strange because i've had them for years so it isn't likely i'm overwatering them... what do you guys think it can be? parasites? viruses? disease? anyone please...

I had that happen, my cactus was gettin big for its pot, So I transplanted it, the roots seemed really soft and I mean soft, like jelly. After one week there was this gray/black shit. I poked the cactus and it fuckin split in 2.

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

it doesn't starts as a spot... it blackens all the cactus from downwards until it's all black and soft and full of black liquid (full nasty bacteria!)...
the cactus have plenty of room in their vases...

hey there!
i think i found the responsibles for the cactus deaths...
they are tiny beetles that hang around the roots and on the soil uder cuttings, etc.
does anyone have an idea of what it is and what can i do against it?

Try gathering up lots of cigarette butts and soaking them overnight in water, the nicotine is highly toxic to insects (and humans). You can then add very pungent/aromatic spices/herbs to the solution (i use chili peppers, garlic, cayenne, onions, cumin, curry, basically anything spicy). Try spraying it all over the plant and on the soil.

The tobacco water is a great idea for mites and whiteflies, but not for bacteria. It sounds like the stress and water caused it. Bacteria just moved in afterwards causing further breakdown and a nasty smell later. I just had a tershekii meet it's death this way also.
Be gentle and don't water heavily after repotting. I am sorry it had to happen to several year old specimens.
Peace
Flat

hi everybody!
i think i found out why they're actually dying. you guys were right, it was too much water for it...
the reason is because when planted they were buried as any other cactus and this has caused benefical conditions for bad organisms to grow...
on its habitat on the very top of mountains it simply lies over granite stones or cracks and sends its roots around to the close moss or whatever can accumulate a little water when it rains...
thank you guys, you're great! i think i'll be able to stop the killing now...
