Myelium layer depth when doing a 60/40 +
    #1345058 - 03/01/03 01:00 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

My friend will be taking his 100% colonized cakes and breaking them into ~ 1 inch (2-3 cm) pieces wearing latex gloves, a clean hat, clean clothes, and a clean t-shirt over his lower face as a germ mask.

The cakes will be crumbled underneath saran wrap in a bowl that was baked for 1 hour at 250 F (110 C) laying upside down, or convexly, and allowed to cool inside for 1 hour.

The casing material will be ~ 60% verm and 40% coir with sterilized water added until only a few drops come out when squeezed; three cups verm, two cups coir, and around 1.5 cups water. It will also contain a handful of crushed oyster shell. This mixture will be microwaved in a dish with a tight fitting lid for 5 minute intervals three times and allowed to cool inside the dish for several hours.

Finally, my question is this:

Given that the bottom layer will be 6 cm thick, what would be the optimum depth for the crumbled mycelium? I'm interested in optimizing the weight and potency of all flushes, not just the first or second ones.

Thanks in advance.

For optimum, you want a nice thick substrate layer. 1" is too thin in my opinion. Generally the thicker the substrate layer, the more abundant your fruits will be in my experience. I like to use at least a 2" deep substrate, sometimes up to 5". It all depends how deep your pan is and how much substrate you have to work with.

A 3" thick substrate layer is minimum IMO, and should be compacted down. The casing layer should be 1" thick, though it can be less depending on how deep your substrate layer is. Generally if your substrate is more than 3" deep you should have a 1" casing layer. Otherwise you can use a thinner casing layer.

According to Stamets, and this is off the top of my head..don't have the book handy... a 1 inch thick casing layer is mandatory coupled with a thick (5+ inches) substrate depth for optimum yeilds.

That's some solid advice. One inch is too little for anything other than maybe a dixie cup
