How to : Clean RTV injection port trick.

A trick to make your RTV ports nice and even. RTV won't stick to a soapy surface. Knowing this you can turn your RTV glob ports into nice little spots.
Materials : Hi-Temp RTV, a dab of dish soap and a flat surface. Glass pane, plate or even hunk of plexi will do.
For tyveck : Place squares of material over jar mouth and stretch into shape with jar ring.
Dab RTV on to desired locations. I use one big spot in the center for grain jars.
Mix about one part dish soap with 3 or 4 parts water. Should be sticky to the feel, not really soapy slick. Spread evenly over your flat surface and allow any bubbles to settle out. A quick spritz from a spray bottle will help.
Place jars RTV down on the surface and allow to cure for 3-4 hours, then lift with a twist. You will have a nice even flat spot of RTV, about 1/8" thick.
Allow to finish curing over nite.
Place preped filters in cold water and bring to boil for 20 min or so, to heat cure RTV. Trim tyveck as you normally do and put to use.
Those who prefer lids need two flat surfaces to sandwich the lids between. Place lid top side down and put a light weight soaped surface on that. A large washer can be used to form a stand off around the flat underside of lid for a little extra thickness.
CAUTION : If using plexi, like I do, do not just let jars sit overnight. RTV may go ahead and stick to plexi anyhow as water evaporates away.

why would you want a dab of RTV that's not stuck to anything?
why not build it right into the lid of the jar?

The RTV sticks right nice to the tyvec. I'm able to reuse these filters half a dozen times or so before they tear along the jar thread area.

I just make lids like this and use a new piece of tyvek each time.
Once I make these lids, they last for years.

I've made lids in your manner also. I just drill a larger hole and flatten RTV as noted above.
Applying direct to tyvec is a quick and dirty where simplicity is the key.

I do my jars the same way as mitch, but I can see the advantages of either. Nice creative write-up. Keep thinking for yourself.
Peace.

Placing tyvek over the lids instead of under can cause a higher rate of contamination. More exposed surface area for nasties to collect.

is that from experience kristen...?
id say the opposite is closer to true. you want the tyvek to stay dry on the outside of the lid, i dont know where you got this surface area warning, but its not accurate.

Hey Ja, having read your trick and mitch's tek, I was curious; does your trick flatten it out thin? Or does it just make it look like an eraser head? Because if it flattens out thin, does it still self heal? I need to get some of the RTV silicone shit. My local hardware store didn't have it. Whatever, I guess this is a dry run, and I'm going to assume shit gets contaminated on this one. Next time I'll aim for perfection.

get your RTV from an auto parts store, not a hardware store.

Greetings pdbnyc,
A dollop of RTV flattens out to about 3/32 of a inch thick. It depends on the depth of your jar band sealing rim. The spot should be the size of a dime to nickel diameter for a strong contact with the filter.
I find they seal just fine and are good for more punctures than the useful life of the tyvek itself. 5 or more reuses. I have made some 4 point filters with smaller spots and they also work well.
Forgot to note, RTV doesn’t stick well to the printed area if recycling envelopes, so use a white area for best results.
M mitch is correct. Look for high temp RTV in automotive supply. Comes in several tube sizes, from a couple of dollars on up.

a wet paper towel is all one needs to shape/flatten/work the RTV silicon adhesive

I use RTV high temp, dab on one side of the lid. Once skinned over I flip it over and dab the other side. I do this by leaving the jars in the box and the lids on the jars without rings. I start by having a 1/4 hole in my tub, I press this down to the lids start to squizz then pull up and twist until separated. repeat. by doing it like this you get a nice clean port without playing around with the RTV and/or getting it all over yourself and your work area. The more you play the longer it takes. At then end you left with a point on the top of RTV port.
Last step, flatten the pointy RTV port. When your PC'ing your Grains put some weight on the ports. I use the second tray in my pressure cooker with 2 more qt's ontop. Between the heat and the pressure of the tray and quarts, it flattens out beautifully For the jars on top I pressure fit some precisely cut doweling against the RTV.
