vacuum? really?
lets hope you didn't manage to short something out but it's likely that the fan pumping air through the heatsink is stuck
the laptop isn't responding at ALL?

vacuuming is a good way to get rid of the dust up in there... i unplugged the fan but while putting the two screws back one fell on the board and i picked it up with the tiny screwdriver (magnetic tip). maybe that did something

a partial vacuum and air flowing can easily create static electricity problems. Was the laptop on battery power at the time or otherwise not grounded decently?
I don't know how significant the static issue is with vacuuming a computer, just know that it exists and electronics often don't take a whole lotta charge to blow, so static can conceivably be a problem.

You probably shorted, and blew, something on the system board. Never run a computer with the fan disconnected. Never disconnect a component, that isn't designed to be disconnected, while the computer is running. Never work on a computer's hardware while it has power, unless it is designed for it. Never work on a laptop while it has power or the battery is attached.
Even something as simple as swapping out memory in a laptop, if done with the battery installed (or the laptop powered), can damage the laptop (and memory).

screw can short any open circuits and magnets are never good for circuit boards if there is power going through the system

Why? I can think of a few isolated cases where a moving magnet could induce a current resulting in loss of magic smoke, but in general I don't see why a magnet near a circuit board is bad.

Hey, he didn't say it was bad to put a magnet near a circuit board, just that they're never good for them... As in they don't make them more efficient or whatever the hell you could consider to be "good for" a circuit board.
=P
On a tangent, I also hate when people say stuff like, "...and that can't be good for you".

You need to put the hard drive from the laptop into the external enclosure. You can then access your data stored on the hard drive from another computer. The laptop, unless you replace the logic board, is trash. You might be able to get a bit of money from it by selling the carcass for parts (after you remove your hard drive).

1. Buy a new computer (or use a second one you already own).
2. Remove the hard drive from the fried computer.
3. Install it into the enclosure.
4. Connect the enclosure/hard drive to your new computer (usually it's a USB connection).
5. Transfer your files.

Try going to Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer Management\Disc Management
Does the drive show up there?

Why would he do that? He wants to copy the files, not boot from the drive.

Sometimes the computer you hook the enclosure to does not provide enough power. They make USB cables that have two connectors on the computer end and one connector on the HDD end. Using two connectors on the computer end provides the extra power needed. Almost all newer computers provide enough power via USB, but older ones often do not.
If the cable you got with the enclosure is like the one I described above, only one of the connectors is for data, the other is for power. I've hooked the power one up, forgetting the data one, and wondered why it wasn't working.
Once it is working, you should see the enclosure drive in 'my computer' (assuming winblows).
Ignore all the people talking about boot manager, etc.
> a tech guy was here, tried all sorts of stuff and said the memory was probabluy damaged.
By memory, I assume you mean hard drive. I would find that to be very unlikely given the failure mode that you outlined in your original post.

Just wondering bored5tiff, did you try completely powering down your "fried" computer - shut it down, unplug, and remove the battery?
There have been times where my computer will not come out of standby, and doing the above and restarting it gets it going again.
