Drug-dealing former officer gets 6 years November 5, 2010 - timesdispatch.com
ROANOKE -- A former police officer who used and peddled methamphetamine from his marked patrol car while on duty for the Pulaski and Radford police departments was sentenced this week to six years in prison.
Christopher Bond, 33, hugged his wife and was led off to prison after Judge James C. Turk sentenced him Monday.
"Here he was enforcing the laws and arresting people for doing what he was doing," Turk said.
Bond took the witness stand in U.S. District Court in Roanoke to say "this situation has been grossly blown out of proportion.
"Other than a police officer, I'm just a person who made a mistake," Bond said.
Bond smoked meth with dealers in his police car and used drugs while wearing his uniform and gun, prosecutors said.
Bond pleaded guilty in July to conspiring to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine. He had been free on $10,000 bail. The mandatory minimum sentence was five years in prison.
Bond worked in Radford from early 2005 until 2006, then in Pulaski until June 2009. He lives in Carroll County and had been working at a telemarketing call center for the past year.
Bond said in federal court that he developed a meth habit that led him to pull up to dealers' homes in uniform and go inside to get drugs.
He objected to being called a drug dealer. He said he sold drugs three or four times and mostly pooled his money with other users to obtain meth.
Bond was caught after he was named by a dealer who had been arrested.
Bond's attorney, Everett Shockley of Dublin, hammered at some of the claims about Bond's behavior, especially the amount of meth the ex-officer was said to have sold. Bond said that there were only three or four times that he took money from a dealer, purchased drugs then delivered them to buyers.
"He had a few close friends with whom he bought and used," Shockley said.
U.S. sentencing guidelines called for 70 to 87 months in prison. Turk said he thought Bond didn't deserve the low end of the guidelines because he had been a police officer. Turk also said he was convinced Bond had changed since his June 2009 arrest.
The 72-month sentence includes a recommendation for intensive drug treatment, which could remove a year of the prison sentence if Bond completes the program.

More than 50g's, so one can only speculate without knowing that the next tier of the law is. (Regardless, picture selling multi-pound amounts of pot V.S. selling dimebags, as he would have you believe he did. But mind you this is an often reckless/destructive/addictive/foul drug, not like pot.)
A number of reasons that while prison may not solve much in the case of a lot of non-violent offender, and drugs shouldn't = incarceration, bucko fucked up serious...
1) Smoking meth while carrying a gun, let alone being surrounded by criminal elements, is grossly irresponsible for ANY person.
2) Perverting the justice system and the assumption of citizens that law enforcement does not impose a double-standard
etc. etc. etc.

The others - the living - are those who pushed their control as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later"

He sure did. Had those roles been reversed, the defendant would be looking at mandatory life most likely.

Forget that he was "just a person who made a mistake" who was addicted to drugs and used while he was working-- This guy "pull[ed] up to dealers' homes in uniform and [went] inside to get drugs. Thats sum bull-fucking-shit. Move manditory minimums from drug offenses to offenses commited by sworn officers. drug users didn't make a commitment to anyone swearing to staying away from drugs; Officers do, however, swear to uphold all laws and this is the only place where i believe MM's should be used.
