What mushrooms will grow on Leaf litter?
    #1344000 - 02/28/03 09:44 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I have an exhaustable supply of dead leaves from mostly Oak and Maple.

Is there anything I can grow on them?

I think Oyster would work, but would I need to adjust the pH or something? I think leaves are somewhat acidic.

Not sure.

Oyters MIGHT be a candidate, yes.
I never tried it though, try and report.

From http://www.indiamushrooms.com/products.htm .

"Pleurotus species can grow on most of the plant waste material containing lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. E.g. cereal straw, cotton stalks and leaves, soybean stalks and leaves, sunflower stalks and leaves, jute and cotton waste, sugarcane bagasse, peanut shells, dehulled corn cobs, used tea leaf wastes, waste paper, compost of white button mushrooms, paper industry waste, coffee byproducts, tobacco waste & apple pomace."

Doesn't Stropharia rugosoannulata grow on leaves?

Edit
Uhh... I mean compost... garden compost?

I find blewits in leaf litter, but I think they grow on the leaf mold, the decomposed leaves. Probably Agrocybe species. Agrocybe praecox not really edible, mycellium runs through the base of leaf piles and fruits heavily in the early spring.
Theres a cultivated Agrocybe I think nameko. Might work with nameko, but I don't know its nutrition requirements. Maybe chicken mushroom, Lyophyllum descastes. {edit} I was thinking of Black Popular mushroom not nameko
Oak leaves contain a lot of tannic acid. Probably need buffered for oysters. Maybe run a lawn mower over them and give them a bath in hydrated lime water.
I've been thinking about using the leaf mold to grow Inky caps and blewits. Lepiota procera would probably also grow on leaf mold.

Keep growing.

Like others said... Lepista nuda (blewit), Macrolepiota procera & Macrolepiota rhacodes are good candidates. But unfortunately they grow very slowly in culture.
