Norml and drug czar- cnn tonight
    #13442703 - 11/06/10 09:41 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

The Good: I’m confirmed to appear this evening live on CNN to discuss the political aftermath and strategies for future Cannabis Prohibition law reforms around the 7:30 PM  hour (eastern).

The Bad: Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske will appear live around 5:30 PM (eastern) to discuss cannabis legalization efforts post the close defeat of Prop 19 this week in California.

Regrettably, because of longstanding protocol at the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the so-called drug czar will not appear live and/or debate with a representative from NORML. Instead, viewers and taxpayers are deprived of the opportunity for a civil discussion from two opposing viewpoints over a long-simmering public policy debate that’s been underway for over 40 years in America.

Instead, the drug czar’s media protocol dictates that he/she generally appear first in public discussions on TV or on the radio (live debates in front of an audience are verboten!), and then the advocate addresses their remarks in a later live or taped interview.

That’s what will happen on CNN tonight on what will be a painfully short, 5-7 minute live interview with Don Lemon.

Fucking Drug Czars.....

Just curious but does anyone know what the Canadian equivalent to a Drug Czar is? Because I don't think we have one.

Well of course they aren't going to debate with someone live on air. The decades-old lies and propaganda only work when no one is there to counter them.

Agreed 100%! There are no valid arguments against legalization that cannot be successfully debunked by even educated high school kids.
If Kerlikowske believes anything at all that he is saying he should welcome the chance to debate publicly instead of portraying himself as a coward. The American people should demand a live debate.

I honestly think marijuana reformers have some of the weakest arguements for legalization.  I'd rather see someone from the DPA or DRC debate the Drug Czar.  Legalising marijuana is a step in the right direction, but far away from were we need to be.  I'd actually much rather see drugs get decriminalized for personal use than see marijuana become legal.

Why would you rather see drugs get decriminalized for personal use than see marijuana become legal?

I would love to hear the explanation fapjack offers as well.  I am genuinely curious how one obtains that viewpoint.  Let us know, fap!

Because our jails are full of drug users, not pot smokers.  I'd rather see drug use be treated as a social issue instead of a criminal issue.  I want to see marijuana become legal, but I'd much rather see judges/prosecutors lose the right to send people to prison for personal use.  I don't really have as much of an issue seeing drug dealers get arrested for the simple fact that the gamble is why drug dealers make money and they are exploiting the drug war.  Its stupid to put them in prison, but without the risk you wouldn't get the reward.  Drug users on the other hand aren't benefiting at all from drug prohibition.  Marijuana legalization would be less of a victory overall than federally decriminalizing person amounts of all drugs.

To some degree I agree with Fapjack, but I'm not sure that marijuana legalization wouldn't be the first step to full drug decriminalization.

Good points, fapjack. I also agree drug use and drug users should not be treated as a criminal issue. My main objection is leaving the black market in place. The damage to society is not from the end user, but from the criminals who regulate the drugs and the police who try and stop them.

The damage I am referring to is easy access to drugs from children, violent crime, addiction, disease, deaths, huge taxpayer expense, etc. I am all for decriminalization too, but as a stepping stone to legalization.

As far as what would legal marijuana do, create jobs, save money, create tax revenue, reduce income to criminals, help people suffering from illness, change police priorities, etc.

I don't see any downsides to legalization, while decriminalizing users simply perpetuates the Drug War.

I agree, ultimately I hope the drug war is ended and drugs become regulated. I think marijuana legalization will be the first step towards legalization, and the next step will be decriminalization of personal use, I just hope I am alive to see it.

Interesting point, fapjack!

I see decriminalization of drugs as only a temporary state that drug policy can reside in. The evils of the black market still exist, so there is always some political incentive to prohibit drugs again. Like veggie said, decriminalization should only be seen as a stepping stone to full legalization: unless any drug is 100% legal, there will be the problems of prohibition.

The good thing about decriminalization is that it encourages people to view use and/or addiction as a medical issue and not a criminal issue. I feel this is important.

So I guess there are two models on how the drug war will end:

1) Marijuana becomes legal, then other substances, one at a time until prohibition is repealed.
2) Drug use is seen as a medical issue, not criminal. Drug possession for personal use is decriminalized, sales remain illegal. Drug prohibition is repealed once it is realized that repealing of prohibition is the best thing for harm reduction.

However, there is no reason why these two things cannot occur simultaneously. At the same time, I don't expect decriminalization for other substances to come anytime soon. The next most commonly used illegal drug after cannabis is probably methamphetamine. People will think anyone who has meth on them should be arrested for a very long time.

I hope the way prohibition ends is people realize that the government has no right in determining what substances one uses for recreation, and the sky won't fall down if drugs become legal.

I understand what you are saying, and I agree with you to a point.  However, I think decriminalization of drugs would be easier to sell to people than legalization of marijuana.  People selling it are still charged, and people with very large amounts are still charged.  It pretty much makes drug use more of a health issue, I don't think most people realize that our prisons are full of drug users, many of whom are busted for simple possesion or VOPs from a drug charge.  Its a shitty bandaid though, but at least it makes it so people aren't getting arrested for just possession, it would also decrease the amount of OD deaths.  I think legalization of marijuana and decriminalization are both just stepping stones, the system is just wrong.  For a country that is supposed to be about freedom, it is very limited.  You can't even legally have sex with a prostitute in the US, what the hell is the matter with these retarded assholes running this country?

I used to think they were retarded too.  But once you dig a little deeper and follow where the money from prohibition goes, you soon begin to realize they aren't retarded at all.  They are just greedy and uncaring.

I saw the report on cnn earlier, not the drug czars thingn but the interview with Norml's advisor.  It was well done, no bs talking. The Norml guy ( i think St. Pierre) was pretty much saying next time around we have to refute the prohibitionists claims and mention that you don't go to work stoned or drive under the influence, like with anything.  The cnn reporter wasnt making shit up or anything.

The clip they showed with drug czar before him was basically him talking about how the pro legalization spent a lot of money to spread their propaganda and shit like that   if there is one person on earth i would have no shame in killing, that would be this guy

Is this up to view online yet?  I've been trying to find it on CNN's site with no luck.
If anyone has a link it would be appreciated.

Bravo! Bravo!  Great discussions. I certain side with fapjack more on this issue.  I'd much rather see decriminalization of all drugs (as a step towards completely ending the War on Drugs) than see marijuana legalized.

But I'll take what I can get.
