At least 12 teens charged after detective enrolls at Redmond High School

At least 12 teens charged after detective enrolls at Redmond High School

By LEVI PULKKINEN
SEATTLEPI.COM STAFF

At least 12 teens associated with Redmond High School are facing drug charges after a long-running undercover operation involving a police officer posing as a student.

In charging documents filed earlier this week in King County Juvenile Court, investigators describe the months-long operation that saw a Redmond police detective enroll in the high school and buy drugs from students there.

Enrolled as a senior in August 2009, the detective described herself as a transfer student who'd recently moved to Redmond from California. She attended classes, ate lunch at the school and lived as a high school student.

According to charging documents, the undercover officer was able to buy a wide variety of illicit drugs at the suburban high school, including ecstasy, heroin and cocaine.

In addition to targeting students believed to be dealing drugs at the high school, the detective sought out and purportedly identified other youths supply drugs to the students.

In one instance in December, the detective was introduced to a then-16-year-old boy who is described in court documents as an ecstasy supplier.

Introduced to the boy by a Redmond High School student, the detective met with the youth at a Kirkland apartment where she bought a small amount of ecstasy.

The following month, the detective bought cocaine and dozens of ecstasy pills from one student, setting up a drug buy at a grocery store parking lot.

Court documents filed Wednesday describe ecstasy sales at the school. On at least one occasion, the detective arranged a drug deal at a cafeteria table.

Describing an October 2009 heroin deal, investigators told the court the detective had been discussing prescription pain killers with a group of students. Having arraigned deals for Oxycontin, the detective went on to buy $120 worth of black tar heroin from a 16-year-old student.

According to a Redmond Reporter report, 11 students were arrested in February.

As the arrests were publicized, Redmond Mayor John Marchione described the investigation as a "wake-up call" for the community.

"The fact that we can be proactive in reaching out to kids in both rehabilitation and enforcement is important," Marchione told the Reporter in February. "To pretend drugs don't exist in high school perpetuates the problem. They're there and if people are shocked if they are found at Redmond High -- or any high school -- I think they are naive."

Court records show that 21 teens have been charged with felony drug offenses. They are not currently in custody.

Seattlepi.com generally does not release the names of defendants charged in juvenile court.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

I can easily imagine a situation like this--en eager buyer with cash--putting black tar heroin into that "dealer's" hands for the first time.

For impressionable youths any under cover op treads dangerously close to entrapment, imho.

I would be more surprised if drugs weren't in any high school across the nation.

They don't call it high school for nothing.

And what's best of all is that the people who think they just snuffed out drugs from school are the naive ones. There'll be another group in there to sell by next month.

In my experience in high school kids didn't have nor were selling h but if someone really wanted it, aka like the undercover cop pushing to get it, then any good dealer with a good supplier could have got it for you. I doubt this kid was pushing h but instead wanted to hook someone who wanted it up. Some bull shit on the cops part, we used to sell to and buy from anyone I'm glad this mother fucker was not in my school.

:dudewtf:
No one did anything in my highschool.
There was one person who kept getting caught with his urine, and steroids were expected if you played sports.
(which explains why none of the guys had balls.  Literally.  Every other week someone was going to the doctor concerned about their balls.)

But that was it.
I don't give me the whole, you just didn't know the right people BS, there were 30 people in my graduating class.
Needless to say there were no secrets.

How does an undercover cop pass off as a high school student? Aren't the youngest cops usually in their early twenties? Around here, 18-year old seniors are more of the exception than the norm. I know that it's possible for somebody to look a lot younger than their age would suggest, but yeesh.

So well 10 people get killed in the surrounding area, the cops are spending their time busting 16 and 17 year olds. This is fucking ridiculous.

How lame, ruining the future of students lives.

For each student you arrest, you let a murderer, a rapist and a thief do as they please.

Reminds me of High school. Parking lots wreaking of pot, kids rolling balls every weekend, then towards the end they were starting to do H.

Moral of the story: If a "transfer student" asks for drugs don't hook them up.

What a waste of time. I'm glad I'm out of high school.

Just another reason why drugs need to be legalized. The current system just doesn't work, and it causes way more problems than if we were to actually regulate drugs. I'm sure I don't need to convince most of you of that though.

Also, agreed on the kid who probably wasn't actually dealing smack, but knew someone who could get it and wanted to hook someone up (18yr old female senior? Obviously he's going to want to go the extra mile).

It certainly isn't entrapment though. The cops would pretty much have to be forcing you to buy drugs or do other illegal things for that to work.

Too easy, she just flirted with anyone. Most high school boys would hitchhike to Columbia for the chance of a blowjob.

This happened when I was in high school as well.  It was a cute blonde transfer student who definitely used the scent of pussy to get people to do stupid things.

I went to a really bad high school in Los Angeles, so there was everything.  However, most of the kids got busted for either meth or weed.  I remember in one of my classes literally half the kids weren't there the next day after the bust was made.  After she was done ruining young kids' lives they announced that she was reassigned to Europe.  Yeah fucking right

Maybe if the cops stopped arresting teenagers, and start arresting the real drug overlords, then there might be less addiction taking place in high school.

That cop shouldn't have arrested those students, but rather come to the conclusion that it is easier to get drugs than alcohol...
