Castro the Multimillionaire, Saddam the Billionaire Totalitarian dictator Fidel Castro insists on communism for the victims of his police state, but not for himself. He has $110 million, according to Forbes magazine's new list of the world's richest people. And Iraq dictator Saddam Hussein is estimated to be a billionaire, even as his subjects go hungry. http://forbes.com/forbes/2003/0317/134.html EDIT: Changed the link.

Totalitarian dictator Fidel Castro insists on communism for the victims of his police state...
Bush got his money from the sale of a stadium off the backs of taxpayers plus oil kickbacks, WCOM, DYN and the raping of shareholders, etc. plus the S&L scandal, but that is somehow "different" than Castro.
Police state? And the USA is NOT?
Here is an experiment for ya, LuvDem: Take a bag of those shrooms that you love so dearly, go down to your local police station and show them your treasures, then report back on your treatment as a "free" citizen. Um kay?

I just thought I'd point out that from Saddam's point of view, he's not killing "his own people." Sure, they're living in his country, but Iraq is a tribal area and these people are from a different tribe, and if they were in power, they'd be doing the same thing to Saddam's people. I'm not saying he's justified for doing it. I'm just clarifying that for you people who keep saying he killed his own people.

Would it not be fair to say that the US has in the past killed their own people? Indians, blacks, Branch Davidians?

This time I agree with Swami. The world would be a better place if all the rich bastards shared. (the obvious has just been stated) That includes Oprah--how does such a bleeding heart amass a billion dollars anyway!
There are plenty of creative ways to share the wealth.

I think the idea here is that Castro and Hussein should share theirs first.
Especially Castro, after all he is a BIG fan of Socialism, or so he says. (liar)
The trouble I have with people that talk about sharing the wealth of others is that generally they don't have much to share. That makes them sound like moochies. And when you mention the fact that the US gives more money to others or that Bill Gates is the biggest philanthropist in the history of the world, the same moochies come back with lines like, "Not enough." To me that proves that they are just greedy bastards like the ones they are defaming.
Maybe we should made "greed" a hate crime. That way Bill Gates can rot in jail with the jealous moochies that would steal his money if given half a chance.
People are greedy by nature. Government cannot fix that.

I'm not going to comment on the who-should-share-first idea, except to say that the theory of generosity transcends the -isms.
Bill Gates has been very generous, and there are (thank the stars) a lot of other great examples of philanthropy. More, more!
you say: People are greedy by nature. Government cannot fix that.
I think you're right on both counts. I don't consider this a government matter. (To go further might require a jump to the SSP forum.) Fortunately, and paradoxically, people are also giving by nature. Or can be.

There are many people going hungry in America. I don't see the american billionaires rushing to feed them.
And of course for every dollar given in aid to various countries in the third world, anywhere from 3 to 13 dollars is taken back from them in debt repayment.
Every single day in 1999, $128 million was transferred from the poorest countries to the richest in debt repayments.
I wouldn't brag too much about the philanthropic nature of the US just yet.

Good thoughts hongomon!
Yes, people can be giving as well. Oddly enough in my experience it is the ones that are poor that also tend to give. I don't know why it works that way. I have been poor and I have been wealthy and I always make it a point to give of my resources to those in need. I remember all too well when I was in their shoes.
Spread the love, share the wealth!
Giving feels soooooooo GOOD!

Well you were right. Perhaps it was because you knew just what a stupid idea it was?

The poor in America are among the most well-fed poor in the world. Our peasants don't go hungry, they go without TV.
