Clavulina cristata? - coral ID
    #13432983 - 11/04/10 08:56 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I found a bunch of these in pine duff in a mixed forest. NJ in early November. Pretty much none of the normal ID request stuff fits so I'll just post a picture and see if anyone recognizes it.

I'd call it Clavilina cristata. It is often attacked by Helminthosphaeria clavariarum, making it turn black/gray from the bottom up. (Around here anyway)

It matches Clavulina cristata allright, but I've never seen them with black/brown tips though.  Is that normal?

It hasn't rained all too much here so maybe it is burning from the sun?

I dunno if it's normal or not but I see them like that a lot. It's not black, but brown.

Thanks! It's really pretty to see how they poke up out of the pine needles.

It seems like they like to grow near fences a lot. Has anyone else noticed that they like areas that I guess are kind of disturbed? I'm not sure yet if it's that they actually like the previously disturbed habitat or just a coincidence.

No, but you do have fresh M. procera and I may need to eat them.

I find them scattered everywhere on the woodland floor, sometimes heavy flushes under large ferns in pine duff.
