South Dakota voters say no to medical marijuana November 2, 2010 - Associated Press
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- South Dakota voters on Tuesday once again rejected an effort to allow patients suffering from a debilitating medical condition legal access to marijuana.
With 48 percent of precincts reporting, 65 percent of voters opposed the measure, and 35 percent supported it.
A similar effort went up in smoke just four years ago, receiving 48 percent of the vote.
Supporters of Initiated Measure 13 said it was an issue of compassion, as those dealing with the pain and muscle spasms of multiple sclerosis or the nausea from cancer chemotherapy treatments should have access to something that could help them.
But opponents expressed concern that the proposed law would lead to increased use of pot by those with no medical need.
The state would have been the 15th to legalize medical marijuana.

Interesting that MMJ is the ONLY treatment that requires a public vote - every other single modality is between doctor and patient.

The question is on whether or not it is counted as medicine.

That is the effect of people in CA abusing the medicinal marijuana program: opponents cite it as a reason to deny medicine to people in other states, and as a result sick people don't get their medicine.
If you want to exploit the medical marijuana system in CA, there is really nothing I can do to stop you. However, please don't take the piss. If you smoke in public near kids and someone asks you to stop, say you are sorry and go somewhere private. Don't say, "fuck off, I am a 'patient' and I have a right!"

They should say "64 percent of voters who like to see other people suffer vote NO" or "64 percent of voters who think they will never have cancer or other illness requiring medical marijuanna vote NO." It is uncompassion from a bunch of people who have never had a horrible affliction or someone close to them. People complain about those who abuse the medical marijuanna system so they can get pot, but what about those who abuse the prescription system in general? There are doctors who over prescribe antibiotics as it's the fastest way to move patients through. Got a cold? here take this antibiotic. Got some pain? here take this Percocet. It's not the medical marijuanna dispensaries that are broken, it's the doctors prescribing it to anyone who walks through the door complaining of a small pain here and there.

When big pharma figures out how to alter, patent, package, and brand it, cannabis will be sold as a medicine - no vote required. Marinol didn't require a vote.
The problem is that it's a plant, a medicinal herb, and it makes one 'high'. Getting high in the US is fine, as long as it's alcohol.
It should be sold in health food stores, like other herbs. I think of the herb St. John's Wort, used for ages as a safe antidepressant, available anywhere. If SJW also made you feel good it would be banned. It is ironic that in the US an antidepressant which makes you feel good would be banned for causing it's intended purpose.
